Change in periods.

Just wondering what you guys think.

For the last 3 months or so my periods have changed from being every 30 days to now being anything between 27 and 36 days. My periods usually last about 5 days, heavier in the first day, then tailing off. My last period started this friday, was v light and was finished by yesterday afternoon.

I had ovarian diathermy in 96 to regulate my periods and make me ovulate, and was sterilised in dec 2001 (don't know if that is relevent).

Should I just put it down as a blip, or would it be worth seeing a doctor about?

Thanks.

Lou ? Cant help as also having problems in this area

lou33 · 25/04/2004 13:42

I'm wondering now if it is perimenopause. I'm 37, so it could be I suppose. Just don't need this right now, of all times.

What's happening with you Charlie?

Constant bleeding Lou! Will go back to Docs and ask more questions as my mind a whirl at mo.

You go too, then are minds will hopefully be put to rest. Are you having any other symptoms?

lou33 · 25/04/2004 13:51

Well I am always bad tempered, but that could also be down to 4 kids, one with sn! I've been having trouble with my joints as well, but the gp said it was down to 2 other conditions i have. I'm v high risk for developing osteoarthritis in the future.

I've just started taking glucosamine and cod liver oil, as well as painkillers. I have a brace for my wrist and supports for my knees. I do feel old atm.

So, bad tempered and joint pain, what about you?

Poor you Lou, and your such a lovely, lively happy person or thats how you came across to me on our meet up. Sorry didnt realize you you were having such a hard time. I get so caught up in all my s*T sometimes.

Im fine, its just annoying. No other symptoms apart from the pnd which is also tons better.

lou33 · 25/04/2004 14:08

I'm glad to hear you are feeling better Charlie . Let me know how you get on at the doc. How long has yours been going on?

Since Ds was Born, am getting paranoid now on my thread about it. My mind in overdrive!

Let me know how you get on too

lou33 · 25/04/2004 20:05

Anyone else?

If it's unusual for you, go to your doctor. It's better to have wasted his/her time than to find later it was something important. Completely different situation to yours but my mum (post menopause) had some slight bleeding and went to her GP straight away. Was serious but, as she'd gone at the first sign of anything wrong, she's made a full recovery.

lou33 · 25/04/2004 20:14

Thanks Soupy. I seem to be living there atm. Glad your mum made a full recovery .

Lou did you get an appointment?

lou33 · 26/04/2004 19:10

Not yet, but have to take ds2 there on weds so might mention it then (he seems to have a urine infection). You?

Lisa78 · 26/04/2004 19:36

Lou, a change in cycle would indicate a alteration of some sort in your hormone profile, which could be down to a million things, but its not uncommon for your cycle to spontaneously change for no other reason than plain awkwardness!
Have you noticed any pattern? It could be that one ovary is releasing an egg every 27 days and the other side every 36 days

There's no reason why glucosamine should affect your periods, it acts directly on the joints to repair cartilege (are you on chondroitin too, thats thought to inhibit further breakdown).

A few painkillers can have an effect, but very few and not usually to the extent of changing your cycle - if you let me know which ones you're on, I'll look it up for you.

I wouldn't have thought that the diathermy would have had an effect but I don't know for sure - similarly the steralisation

Go to the doctor!

lou33 · 26/04/2004 19:38

Thanks boss! It couldn't be the glucosamine or the painkillers as I have only started taking them last week, so it has to be something else. I'm almost embarrassed to go to the doc again, I seem to be living there right now!

well go anyway, a bit of embarrassment never killed anyone! Besides, if its a male he might think you fancy him.... (does that make it better or worse?!)

charlieplus3 · 26/04/2004 20:30

Lou, tomorrow at 3.30

dogwalker · 26/04/2004 20:45

Lou - hope you're OK. I've also been worried about whether I'm pre-menopausal (at 38 I consider it a bit early) but my periods are stretching out instead of being every 28 days as they used to be, I have now been late by four or five days for the last 2/3 months. I've got a coil fitted (not mirena so no hormones) which has recently been checked out by the doc. She said its common to have late periods but it hasn't been that way for me before and I consider any change very suspicious. It would be intersting to know what your dr says.

Cavy · 26/04/2004 20:51

I thought that periods becoming much lighter wasn't that important. It's when they suddenly get heavier that it usually means something bad is happening(?)

dogwalker · 26/04/2004 20:52

You might be right Cavy but I suppose any change from what is "normal" for you can be a little bit worrying.

lou33 · 26/04/2004 21:26

Lisa, the male docs at my surgery would mean it was a bad thing!

Ds is seeing a lovely lovely female doc on weds (dh thinks she is a babe ), who also knows me from my recent problems, so I will mention it and see if she thinks it worth making an appointment.

Dogwalker, I was looking stuff up online about perimenopause, and it says this can occur up to 10 years before the menopause itself, so I guess I am not too old really. My mum was in her late 40's when she started hers I think.

OP posts:
lou33 · 28/04/2004 10:46

I asked the doc her advice today when she was seeing ds2 (he has balanitis ). She says the most likely cause is that the ovarian diathermy I had in 96, to rectify my polycystic ovaries, has now stopped working. I have to keep a log for the next few months and see what happens.

Lisa78 · 28/04/2004 10:49

and then you have to go back Lou, to be on the safe side
stalk stalk

lou33 · 28/04/2004 10:52

Lisa78 · 28/04/2004 11:04

lou33 · 28/04/2004 12:51

Sorry mum.
