Dealing with croup

Anyone have any tips for dealing with croup? I got it loads as a child and now DS gets it every time he has a virus. We use a vaporiser in his room and get the bathroom steamy and sit in there with him when it's very bad. We've been to A&E five times in the last ten months with croup. Twice they sent us home only for us to come back later (usually around 3am) when it got worse. Then they finally gave him the medication.

I would welcome any advice, information, etc that you can offer.

Sorry Tex but I have nothing new to add. You seem to be doing the right thing.

My DD had it once when she was 9 mths old (she's now 4) and I did exactly the same as you - steamy bathroom - and she did improve.

Sorry that I can't help any further xx

We were advised to sit in a steamy bathroom with him and then take him out into the open (hopefully cold) air. I sat in the bathroom and my husband did the walks.

But give him any medication while doing it. I've learned (in other things), it's always better to give the drugs before they get really bad. Hope it gets better from here for you.

JJ, I left his window open a crack last night and the cool air plus the vaporiser has had the best effect yet! He was still coughing through the night but the wheezing was much less and tonight the croup seems to be gone. Thanks so much!

I'm sure you know this, but the clamer you are the calmer they get. Any sign of parental panic has a detrimental effect. Sips of cool water, a boiling kettle with the lid off in the bedroom (if still in cot) walk in the night air, and propping them up. many's the long night of dozing upright with DS slumped noisily in my lap. Apparently it usually goes by 5...counting the days...
