On the eczema front I would avoid all cream that have petrocemicals in. You could then try creams from say Neals Yard (double check ingredients). DS had a nut allergy so I avoided all those that had nut oils in very hard to do). You will have to check loads of ingredients but I would look at the brands that emphasise their natural ingredients - L'Occitane etc.

DS had horendous eczema as a baby (wet wrappin the works) and in the end I found that really limiting his exposure to water to be a good step to take. Quick shower and only if he really needed it.

All the food front I would avoid any foods with the liquid parrifin in as long as it is feasible. DS also has serious allergies and as you know traces of his allergen could spark a reaction.

It sounds possible I would avoid foods with these as much as possible and see if there is a change after a month. I have a reaction to a type of presative used in jam and marmalade (so have to be careful not to eat too much but at first it was trial and error

of course your dd is more likely to suffer side effects if she is allergic to something. or am i missing the point here?

if i am allergic to wheat, anything i eat that has wheat in will cause a reaction in me more than it will in someone who isn't wheat intolerant.

hello, I got this from a little book called 'the chemical maze - shopping companion'. I hasten to add that I am not an expert!

My dd also has allergies and excema. Sory I didn't see your thread in the allergies bit.

Anyway...E905 is called microcrystalline wax, and is derived from crude oil. it is used in food as a glazing agent and in patricular in cake decorations. it is also used in tablet coatings, laminating paper and foils. It doesn't have any particular nasty effects to people generally (unless you're allergic of course) and the book gives it two smiley faces which means it's not at all damaging to the environment or people generally.

HTH - you could always google 'microcrystalline wax' to find more detailed info.

BTW I'd recommend this book 'the chemical maze' as it gives useful info about the enviornmental/people hazards in food and cosmetic ingredients. It's by Bill Statham and I use mine all the time.

Not sure if this is related but a friend of mine has a son who witholds his poo. COnsultant's approach is to give him laxatives so that he can't hold it in (not sure what I think about this as a treatment as DS has a similar habit) and guess what the laxative is - Liquid Parafin.

Whenever she gets it from her Chemist they always remind her that it is not for human consumption. I personally would avoid it as if she reacts on her skin she is likely to react if ingested. When DS attends hospital to test for possible allergent he first thinghtey do is rub it on his skin if he reacts there they do not let him eat it and we are told to strictly avoid it thereafter.

not fit for human consumption?? why prescribe it then!?!

drosophila · 27/10/2006 13:04

I know!!! i was about to go to a consultant with very same problem but when I heard that this was the normal course of action I balked. Luckily DS seems to have gotten better without intervention but as I understand it it can come back at times of stress. I could understand using prune juice or fybo gel or some natural laxative but Liquid Parrifin!!!!
