Has anyone's GP prescribed this vaccine for their child privately or otherwise? DD is 4 and doesn't qualify for the jab under the NHS system , I left a message with the receptionist for one of the partners asking wether they would prescribe it privately for my DD the answer came back as no. I will be ringing back tomorrow to speak to the GP myself as the reasons given were rubbish! Just wondered how much luck anyone else has had?

you don't need it do you?

I thought the reason for under 2 was because there was more risk due to immature systems but that over the age of 2 that risk decreases exponentially

I think they will do a catch-up programme eventually but have targetted the most at-risk groups. It is a different vaccine for over 2's.

My GP said that they will do for at risk groups ie those with asthma or some other things. As dd has had pneumonia already they said they will look into whether she should have it.

I was at a Meningitis Trust evening the other week

The lady was talking about the vaccine and how it was for under 2's etc and people at High Risk

So I asked would my DD be at a higher risk having had Pneumococcal Meningitis once. She said she may have been given it up to the age of 5

Ellie is 5 and 6 weeks!!!

sorry, not sure what my point is lol

Just would have thought my DD may be classed as Higher risk, especially as she has suffered brain damage and has a shunt fitted (becasue her membranes around brain have been damaged it would be easier for her to get an infection, I think!!)

I may mention it to her Paed next time we see her

Thanks for replies.
Twig - I know the risk is reduced but there is still a risk as there is for anyone and I just feel that I would be more reassured if she had it. An 8 yr old died of pneumoccocal menigitis in a town close to us a couple of years ago.
LIZS - When i looked in the formulary Prevenar can be given up to 5 yrs but they need 2 doses.
