Colposcopy for cervical erosion - what to expect?

I have the most uninformative letter from the hospital - just tells me to turn up.

I googled Colposcopy so at least I know what they're rooting around for. But should I expect any treatment? Would they do anything other than 'look' for the first appointment? And would I be ok to drive home afterwards?

They may treat you immediately if they find a polyp. If they can they will remove it for analysis.
If the procedure becomes painful for any reason they may offer you an injection. You will have two. One to numb the tissue and then the actual injection.
A flexible tube with a camera will be inserted into your vagina. It will give a clear picture of the neck of your cervix.
You must have had a cervical smear that showed some problem so they are taking a look.
Be reassurred, mostly it is not serious. If they feel it is necessary you may be offered a treatment that removes any suspect cells. It is called a cone biopsy. It will be done under General Aesthetic.

You may like to take a pad with you, although you will probably be provided with a pad. Afterwards you may feel period pain like cramps.
Best of luck and hope all is well. X

Colposcopys are fine, just a bit uncomfortable.
In most cases, they take away a bit of goo and analyse it. If they find dodgy cells, they'll call you back in for something called 'the loop' where they freeze burn the cells away. This is painless and done with an injection to numb you.
In very rare cases they decide to do the loop there and then but that's not really very often.
I've had a number of colposcopys and they aren't too different from a normal smear, just take a bit longer.
They will offer you a pad, or take your own, to catch the spotting.
You will be fine xx

Thanks Smile, I should be fine to drive myself then.

Seen three doctors, all three have said "it's not a problem but I'd like you to see ". I have no symptoms, my GP picked it up while removing my coil, apparently cervical erosion is quite common and doesn't require any treatment if there are no symptoms. So in my opinion this is a huge waste of NHS money.
But better safe than sorry and all that.
