Post chemo raised temperature, what are the risks?

My sister is having treatment for breast cancer and is on her fourth lot of chemotherapy. She's just been asked to go in to hospital as her temperature is raised.

She's going to text me later to let me know whether they'll keep her in or not. Can anyone reassure me? Thank you.

They like to get anti-biotics in when you have a raised temperature as there may be an infection

The chemo will have killed your our white blood cells so you need to fight the infection with the anti-biotics

That's what they told my dad (lung Cancer)

Your sister has neutropenia caused by a low white blood cell count. Cancer patients undergoing chemo are always told to contact their hospital if their temperature is raised. They are then admitted and put on a drip. It isn't uncommon but must be dealt with as soon as temperature goes up. I'm on chemo (and have been for most of the last 18 months) but have so far not had this problem but a friend had it on her last chemo cycle and stayed in hospital a couple of days.

She is almost certainly going to stay in while they deal with or eliminate an infection. It's pretty normal for a chemo patient, and she is likely to be on barrier nursing and put into a side room. There is a strict protocol for the hospital to follow to keep her away from possible further infection. My DH went in for the same thing a number of times while he was having chemo.

My son is undergoing chemo for the second time. As soon as he gets a temperature of 38 he has to be admitted for IV antibiotics - they assume bacterial infection and treat accordingly until the blood cultures prove otherwise which takes 48 hours. It can be a real pain as often he ends up staying in for 3 nights when there's nothing wrong, but obviously they can't take any chances.

I hope your sister gets out soon and that the rest of her treatment goes well x
