TSH-TTC- two miscarriages

Hello. Just looking for some advice. Sorry this is long.

I am 29.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in July 13. No idea what my tsh was but was told take this tablet and it will all be fine (50mcg levothyroxine)

In September 14 told gp I want to TTC im coming off the pill. She says great, you're tsh is 1.27, you'll have no problems.

October 14, I'm pregnant, no period after stopping the pill. Gp says your tsh has gone up to 1.8, increase to 75mcg.

Missed miscarriage and erpc in December. Same day it was discovered gp says your tsh is 0.27! Go back to 50 mcg.

February 3rd 15 Bfp! Have blood test and GP says your tsh is fine don't change anything so I don't question anything.

Today, second miscarriage confirmed. GP not interested, says its just like having a period two weeks late. I ask what tsh level was from last test out of interest. It's 2.28 but no change in meds.

Everything I've read says 1-2 is best to TTC again.

I don't understand how the highest level is now suddenly ok when it wasn't before.

I know I should have asked my GP but I was crying, embarrassed etc

Please tell me your positive stories and reassure me I can still conceive at 2.28 or what I should be doing or asking to sort this out.
Two miscarriages in three months has really hurt and the only thing keeping me going is the thought that next time it goes wrong they will at least do tests. I was under the impression I should tell my GP asap if I got pregnant but now I just feel like I wasted their time.
I'm terrified I'll never have a baby.

I am sorry this has happened to you - on the thyroid support thread on this page-someone has posted a link to the NICE guidelines.

Have you seen an endocrinologist at all?

I can't complain as I do have two children with no changes to dose/& I was naive about the impact of this condition & luckily all was fine- however since then I have had a long time TTC had a MMC & the consultant said this may have been due to my TSH levels.

I am early pregnant 6 weeks & went straight to GP at 4 weeks who tested my TSH & upped my dosage to 150mg I am being tested again at 8 weeks. I had the nice guidelines with me but actually did not need them as GP was on it.

I am not sure if any of this helps, but just sharing.

If it was me I would Get a referral to an endocrine or see GP with nice guidelines which also covers TTC.

Sorry for your loses :(

Tsh is fine to conceive at levels above 2, I'm hypo on 75mgs and my levels are always approx 2.7. I've had 3 pregnancies on these levels, never upped my thyroxine etc during pregnancy (never actually been tested during pregnancy!) and always been fine.

I know there's loads of people on here saying they must be below 2, but even on the thyroid uk website it suggests you're only still hypo if levels are above 2 and t4/3 are not right. Thus if t3/4 (the active hormones) are right then as long as tsh is in range (upto 4.5) then it's fine. The active hormones are the important ones. Tsh is just the negative feedback mechanism that is a result of poor t4/3.

In fact most GPS are happy with people on levels of upto 4.5 so most women are probably on levels over 2. Mine has always been around 2.7 but my t4 is 22, can't remember my last t3 but it's a good result so to suggest I'd be still hypo is wrong as my optimum active hormones are fine.

I know being hypo can make you paranoid about miscarriage but sadly even two miscarriages are quite common really. It's easy to think hypo is responsible for everything but it's not necessarily true.

Though tbh I'm surprised you weren't advised to give yourself time to recover after the first miscarriage as getting pregnant so soon does increase your next miscarriage rate (I was advised to wait 3 months so allow my lining to build up etc). Even after 3 months I had a scan (as I'd retained some products of miscarriage) which showed my lining was still very thin and was advised to wait a further 3 months before ttc as it was likely I'd miscarry again.

In all my pregnancies I've only met an endo once and that was on my 3rd.

If your t4/3 are ok I'd trust your doctor. It looks like initially your gp only increased your dose because you were pregnant not because your tsh level was too high. Which is what is supposed to happen. It didn't happen with me and I was still ok so I wouldn't necessarily connect the two.

Sorry this has happened to you, it's horrible.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm just very confused. Apart from the initial diagnosis in 2013 my t3 and t4 have not been retested. What should they be?

I think I'm just frustrated because no one is willing to talk to me about it. Even at the booking in appt in October the midwife wrote 'high risk' on my file and when I asked why she said it was just procedure but she was making an appointment with a consultant for me. Of course I didn't make it to that appointment.

Also with regards to getting pregnant again, I was told by the midwives at the epu that there was no reason not to try again straight away and it would not cause any problems. Was this wrong?
