Completely fed up out of control asthma

Sorry for sounding so whiney but I'm just so exhausted.

I came down with a cold in between Xmas and new year which triggered my asthma and I just can't seem to get any control back. I know when I initially went to the Drs I should have just asked for some prednisolone but i just took the precautionary anti biotics and stronger inhaler (or so I'm told). I'm a bit better than what I was but still wheezing a bit and coughing all through the night. I have literally no support at home and can't get to the Drs until next week. Does anyone know of anything I can do that I've not thought of or any suggestions for the dr/asthma nurse when I actually make it in?

can you ring the doctors and speck to someone, maybe they can then advice you on the best dose to try with what you have until you can see someone. We can normal get a phone appointment at our sugary thesame day.
Unmumsnet net ((hugs))

I have oral steriods at home for DS ready should he needed them if ill. If you regularly have problems and have difficulty getting out maybe worth asking too have some for another time.

Short term, inhale steam. No olbas oil or anything, just steam 4 times a day. It does sound like you might need steroids or nebulisers to get on top of this. Is it that you can't get to the doctor or the doctor can't see you til next week?

Articroll · 16/02/2015 08:59

Thank you. I'm my own worst enemy and I never let anyone know how much I am struggling with anything. I can't get to the Drs until the dc are back at school next week no one to have them and 2 out of my 4 have hearing loss so find busy environments stressful and they just can not wait an hour for me to be seen. But I hadn't thought of phoning my own gp should be in tomorrow if she's not booked the week off with her los so she might be able to help over the phone thank you ??. I'm just so tired from the coughing I am struggling to think straight. I know I always come out the other end but I really need to learn to say that I feel terrible and no act ok to the dr kicking myself I know I'd have been fine now if I'd said I wanted pred ?? stupid thing is she said my air entry was terrible she could hear my wheeze without the stethoscope and I had blue nail beds and couldn't blow in a peak flow but because my O2 was ok (95) she said she'd normally send me to hospital on my symptoms but as my O2 was ok it was up to me and I chose to stay at home stupidly as 2 1/2 nearly 3 weeks down the line I'm still struggling granted not half as bad. Sorry for whining and being sorry for myself I know there are people much worse than me. Off to try the steam

Have up to 10 puffs of salbutamol via a volumatic spacer every 4 hours.

Speak to a GP today and make a same day appointment. You probably need steroids. What preventer are you on?

Articroll · 16/02/2015 09:45

I was on clenil but they switched me to fostair which works when I take it but only lasts about half an hour to an hour and I can only take 8 puffs in 24 hours. I am much better than I was but I'm still up all night coughing and in the evenings I start wheezing and struggle to breathe out. Maybe I just need to give it longer to take effect?

No the Fostair is a good combi inhaler but when you're struggling with an episode after a viral illness or chest infection it is best to see the GP as it won't tackle the acute inflammation.

I'm surprised you didn't get given steroids last time tbh - with audible wheeze and possible admission being discussed you should have had a course.

Go back ASAP - explain on the phone you need to be seen but will have the children and can't wait too long in the waiting room. Insist on seeing someone today.

(I'm an asthma nurse).

It's likely my own fault I am very good at acting like I'm ok when I'm really not. I think I've id have been honest and told her I was really struggling and wanted a steroid she would have given me one but I did my usual and laughed it off and apologised for bothering her :( just on hold for Drs now I'll see if they can either get a dr to call and arrange for a prescription to be left at the desk (they've done it before depends on who I speak to) or if they can sort someway of me not having to wait so long in the waiting room like maybe I could call and see how late they're running before I leave.

Get some presnisolone, currently going through a really similar situation at 25 weeks pg. feel for you a lot!

BeaLola · 18/02/2015 00:42

Feel for you as I have been there /am there frequently over the last year. I can never get any Drs appts When I'm really wheezy (takes a lot for me to be honest about it which is plainly stupid) I have done a phone call with Nurse practitioner and have been prescribed steroids. I went for ages last year without doing anything and ended up with a collapsed lung so gave learnt my lesson.

Google the butyeko technique - I found it helped me.

Thank you everyone I managed to get in with the asthma nurse yesterday and I'm now on prednisolone and a different anti biotic. She brought in the same dr I saw a few weeks ago who actually thought I sounded worse than when she last saw me. I'm to go back once the course has finished and they'll prescribe an antihistamine as the pollen is also a trigger for me. I've given in and told them how bad I am as I'm so exhausted I'm not sure how much more I can take. Probably over reacting as I'm feeling a bit drained and emotional sure I will be feeling better soon. Thank you so much for the support. Sbear hope you're feeling better soon.

What I meant with the pollen is so I have it in time for the season rather than it causing a flare up and then going to get it.
