Tingling numbness in fingers and weak wrists. could this be the start of ms?

smellyfishead · 13/02/2015 12:10

For 2 weeks now ive had a numbness in my left hand, the outer three fingers. saw a nurse 10 days ago who thoroughly examined me, she said it doesn't appear to be carpel tunnel or ulnar nerve entrapment and sent me away to take nurofen and come back if it got worse.

Well the sensation has not subsided at all and in the past 2 days im starting to get a numbness in the same fingers on the other hand.
Ive also had a weak wrist on the right arm-which ive had since last oct but I just thought id slept funny on it and haven't paid much attention to it. Now both wrists are noticeably weaker-eg simple things like getting a casserole dish out the oven or lifting a half full kettle- my wrists feel like they are going to give out. I also have occasional swelling round the base of my thumbs.

Ive had some tingling numbness in both feet too although that comes and goes like normal pins and needles.
Although im on the cuddly side, im always cold, like I feel the core of me is cold, even though my hands may be warm iyswim? the only other thing different is ive also had a few incidents in the last 2 weeks where ive not quite made it to the loo in timeBlush this is completely out the blue and im not drinking excessive caffeine or carbonated drinks.

Anyone had similar symptoms, what did it turn out to be? anyone got ms, how did your symptoms start?

Im back off to drs later today, nurse said nect step is nerve conduction study so will report back when ive seen the dr later.

Ask your doctor to do thyroid function and vitamin D levels before you panic about MS it could be lots of things.

Are you on a keyboard a lot? I'm wondering if it could be Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) caused by typing or any small, repetitive movements (e.g. playing a musical instrument, or sewing). The symptoms in the hands can be very similar to those you are describing. Not sure about the bladder and feet though. HTH and good luck.

Redglitter · 13/02/2015 12:26

I had very similar (without the cold) but also had spasms in my hand. Doctors initially said carpal tunnel then ruled it out. After tests at the hospital where they tested my nerves etc they said I had trapped nerves in my elbows, due largely to sitting at a keyboard for such long spells.

They gave me splints to wear in bed for a while and then said the only other option was surgery to remove the nerves which Ive decided against for now

Could be lots of other things. Go
Back to gp
And get some bloods and see if he thinks scans are necessary. Don't worry could be something simple

smellyfishead · 13/02/2015 12:34

I think my vit d should be ok as I take a supplement, ive had thyroid tested in the past but it was ok.
anote- Im on the pc a lot yes, but mostly reading not typing so much, I don't text a lot and I don't play any instruments. If it had started in my right hand id think rsi too but it started in my left hand which I don't do a lot with anyway as im right handed!

Turquoise- if it was something like ms or arthiritis would that show up on a blood test?

smellyfishead · 13/02/2015 20:57

Right so still none the wiser, he said nothing about a nerve conduction study.

He looked at my hands, wrists and feet, checked all my reflexes (which all worked) and told me to book an appointment to have some bloods taken.

Partner got quite cross when I told him and said this has been going on long enough ring back Monday and ask to see someone sooner (bloods Thursday another dr appt the week after)

Something's not right, but I felt like a right Muppet trying to explain to the dr about it, he was giving me funny looks too (was he thinking here's a hypochondriac??) and consequently I felt too embarrassed to mention the accidents/U.I.
pretty sure theres a whole host of tings that wont nescessarily show up on a blood test so i hope they will do something else if they come back clearHmm

I had this with b12 deficiency was convinced of Ms

smellyfishead · 13/02/2015 21:22

No it wont be b12 because I take iron supplements.

OP posts:
Reekypear · 13/02/2015 21:26

It could be RSI or gout.

arlagirl · 13/02/2015 21:28

Interesting. My hands are perpetually cold and I always feel chilled.
I do have vit d deficiency as I have a sun allergy. I am going to book some blood tests.

smellyfishead · 13/02/2015 21:28

gout? I have no idea what gout is, I thought it was similar to arthritis? off to google

OP posts:
noddyholder · 13/02/2015 21:29

I am not iron deficient I had a high haemoglobin and still b12 deficient

Kundry · 13/02/2015 21:30

It could absolutely be B12 as B12 has nothing to do with iron supplements.

Kundry · 13/02/2015 21:31

Also this is nothing like gout and Dr Google is not helping you Smile

originalusernamefail · 13/02/2015 21:31

I had a numb left thumb for months, and would wake up unable to move my hands from the "claw" position or pick anything up. It was a trapped nerve in my neck and elements of carpal tunnel. Saw physio, did the exercises, now stiff but improving. Try not to worry OP, it may be an easy fix.

Seriouslyffs · 13/02/2015 21:33

Have you got a new phone, or new game or app on your phone. I've had pain, numbness and weakness when I've been 'at it' too much

piggychops · 13/02/2015 21:34

Another one voting for vitamin B deficiency.

smellyfishead · 13/02/2015 21:35

reading about gout it does not sound like that is it. this is not skeletal pain, rather pain in the tissue(when my bases of thumbs swell slightly) and strange numbness & weakness, as i say i felt stupid trying to explain it to the dr! Ive no pain anywhere in back, elbows, upper arms, shoulders or neck.

Hi there. I have m.s. mine started with pins and needles down my back which worsened when I looked down. There are lots of ways that m.s. can start though and there are lots of other diagnoses that could explain your symptoms. You need to ask for a referral to a neurologist if you want it to be ruled out quickly. It can't be done by a blood test. It is a brain scan and a lumbar puncture. It normally takes a year to get a diagnosis of m.s. as there are that many other things that those symptoms could be that medics are always ruling other things out. Try not to be too afraid -easier said than done. I have had it 12 years. I work nearly full time, raise 2 kids and just finished a master's degree. M.s. is not a death sentence.

smellyfishead · 13/02/2015 21:41

I was checked for anemia before xmas, would that not have showed b12 anemia, or only iron anemia?

As I said up post I don't usually type/text much, as a guide I usually send 1-2 texts a day! I don't play games either on mob or a console, I don't do anything particularly repetitive!

OP posts:
noddyholder · 13/02/2015 21:43

It isn't the same you need a specific test.

Turquoiseblue · 14/02/2015 17:49

I d get the b12 test and mention the U I too. Try not to worry.
Go to the gp but before you go - write a timeline and symptoms.
Don't be embarrassed don't get side tracked and hopefully then the gp can work out what s up easily for you. X

Beachcomber · 15/02/2015 16:40

Please get your b12 checked. I have just been diagnosed with a deficiency and I had pins and needles/tingling in my arms plus a slightly numb toe. I wasn't anemic in the sense that my haemoglobin was (just) within range but my b12 was on the floor. Don't be fobbed off by being told that you are in normal range if you are around 200 - in some countries they consider less than 500 to be too low. Good luck.

Beachcomber · 15/02/2015 16:43

Just reread your OP. I had weak hands too and the base of my thumbs felt weird and was sometimes sore. I would struggle to do something like pour from a jug of water/the kettle.
