Confusing thyroid question

Im normally really fit and well but for a week started feeling really strange. My blood pressure shot up to 150/100 (usually 100/60) and had a horrible strong shaky nervous feeling I couldnt seem to get rid of. I had palpitations and a tremor. All very weird as I dont suffer from anxiety and life is pretty peachy at the moment.

I popped to see my lovely gp this am and he seemed to strongly suggest hyperthyroid (mum has Graves disease). He took some thyroid bloods and gave me propanalol for my bp.

He is going to ring me tomorrow with results but Ive seen the results (I have some medical knowledge but am pretty hopeless at endocrine stuff).

I obv dont have hyperthyroidism as my results are -
TSH 1.91 (0.3-4.4)
T4 12.8 (9 - 19.1)

But he also did my anti-TPO antibodies too (I really know very little about this).
They are: 124.0. (

Looks more like Hashimoto's Disease to me. You are positive for TPO antibodies, which pretty much clinches it.

That FT4 is in the bottom 40% of the range, which suggests that FT3 (the active hormone) will be low too causing symptoms which can mimic those of hyperthyroidism.

Best talk to your doctor about this. I'm a historian (and thyrowarrior)

Ah! Thanks for the reply rockind. My gp didnt ring with the results so Im still left wondering....
I thought he would just look at the tsh and t4 - then class it as all ok. Im feeling very weird - shaky and short of breath.

Sorry to ask you (you seem to know a bit about it and your my only reply Smile). Do they treat bloods like mine or just watch and see if the tsh and t4 become abnormal?

It's a vexed area. Some advise that anyone with positive antibodies should be treated regardless of the other results, others play the waiting game. You do need to get your symptoms sorted out though and this might be a lever to press for treatment.

Thank you for replying - you are a star Grin

Some do, some don't , but if you have symptoms, there is an argument for treating.
