Vitamin D deficiency - does your memory and cognition ever recover?

QuintlessShadows · 09/02/2015 09:19

I have 11 weeks to go of 12 weeks course of high dose vitamin d. My level was 23, so quite bad when you consider optimum level is 90, and 75 is consider low but still in normal range.

I have all the symptoms. I am worried that my brain won't recover, and I won't get my memory and reasoning facilities back.

Does anyone have any experience or know of any research that can throw light on my brains prognosis for recovery?

Don't panic! You have 11 weeks to go yet. My level was lower than yours and I had a 3 month course of high dose Vit D. I didn't feel any better for about 4/5 weeks or so, then I suddenly did, it takes time to build the levels up again, which is frustrating, but you will get there. I didn't wake up one morning and think "everything is back to normal", but I began to notice an increasing normality about myself. My brain did recover, as did my ability deal with the DC and their squabbles. Your brain will too!

Thanks for replying. Did you feel really "stupid" and unable to cope with thinking at any point early on?

I am just worried I will never be myself again.

Will a holiday somewhere sunny help the process do you think (my sister lives in the canaries)?

Good luck op

I think need this

How much are you taking every day?

Karoleann · 09/02/2015 14:21

I had an injections (had to pay for them though), felt back to normal within a couple of weeks. I chose the injections as they work more quickly.

mousmous · 09/02/2015 14:28

it does get better but takes a couple of weeks.
I still need sleep :o but feel more alert when awake. not this heavy feeling anymore.

indecisiveithink · 09/02/2015 14:40

Where did you go for the injections?

QuintlessShadows · 09/02/2015 14:42

I am taking 3 tablets of 500 mcg each once a week. Been told to keep Up with multi vitamins and omega3

Yes I did feel "stupid" and totally exhausted. I couldn't get enough sleep, but it wasn't refreshing - it was like someone had turned off my power switch. The poor DC's became very used to letting me sleep on the sofa - I missed the summer basically! If you have the chance to go and stay with your sister go for it, but don't use sunscreen over 20 spf - you won't get the benefit of all that lovely sunshine!

It does get better, almost without you realising it, I feel 200% better than I did 6 months ago. My levels are in the low normal range now and my consultant has given me a maintenance dose, related to another condition I have so hopefully I'll maintain that. I worried too that I would never be myself again, but I am - I promise.

You just need to look after yourself and rest (easier said than done I know!) and give the pills time to work. Don't do what I did and start a stressful new job just as I was diagnosed which required a very sensible, switched on brain - that was a tricky one, but I managed!

Hi it does get better but takes time my level was >7.5!!!! A year ago got up to 77 in summer with prescribed vit d.... Maintainance dose is 800iu and l feel my levels have dropped again !

Sorry to hijack .... My DD has a level of 9. She's been prescribed 5000ui per day. Doctor wants her to have injections to get her level up. She's had infection after infection. Should it be two to three weeks before she sees an improvement?
