...the one they keep advertising on T.V.? If so, does it work/what's it called? Other nit treatments I've tried havn't done what they proclaim so I'm cautious, but been waging battle with the blighters in dd1's hair (very thick) and I'm losing patience!!!

the one call full marks? yes, used it on dss and ds both with heads full of crawlers!! I also had used a lotion with no success. Used the moose 1 night, then checked and removed any other lice for the next 6 nights, then as a precaution repeated another dose of the moosse after a full week. V. pleased to report that it worked!!! This was last summer and we've not had them back. Lice are horrible, but the full marks worked for us. Good luck

it didn't work for me. my dd has very thick hair and i found the mousse wouldn't get right down on to her scalp and one tin wasn't enough to massage right in. i tried loads of things and my health visitor said there are two different types of nit treatments (though i can't remember what the difference was) and nits can get used 2 one type so she advised me 2 fone local health centre and find out what wasn't working locally.
in the end the only thing what worked was chinese whispers which i bought in the health shop and it didn't strip dd hair.
my big problem is the one other mum at school not treating her child so the whole class is suffering again and again.

Had a group session with HV at DD's nursery today. She thinks the only real prevention is regular wet combing once a week with a metal comb.
Shampoo first then leave on conditioner and meticulously comb through from root to tip until each handful of hair has been combed.
Put on their fave video and make it a pampering session - I'm not sure what DS's will make of this!
Should any of the beasts appear, repeat this process every 2-3 days until the head is clear.

Lieman, we have exactly the same problem with the mousse. Just can't get it right to the scalp.
We do the conditioner and combing thing like momp to try and keep on top of it.

The stuff I used on my dd, after 2 other solutions failed is Malathion. It stays on overnight and according to our local health authority is the only stuff that works. Well it certainly worked, fingers crossed, with my dd. It is quite expensive though - £9 for 2 applications). HTH

I used the mousse on my 3s (and my own....yuck!)hair last summer and it worked. I was actually applying in whilst in early labour with no4. There was no way I was bring a baby back to a lousey house(y)!

Took ages to do all the combing etc but well worth it as our little friends haven't returned

batey · 23/04/2004 06:21

Thanks for those, not sure if I'll give it a go or not. She has v. thick hair and like Lieman, I think we're on top of it and she brings new adults home from school. Am currently wet combing etc every other day but we're both getting so bored with it.Ho hum!

If you want to try a non-chemical treatment, try this:

Use a base oil (cooking oil will do, but I use almond oil) with a few drops of tea tree and lavender essential oils mixed in. Massage well into scalp and comb through hair (thoroughly!) Comb through with nit comb before shampooing. Nit comb again whilst still wet. Shampoo again to remove last traces of oil.

Takes a while to do (especially with my waist length hair), but hasn't failed me yet.

Have had endless headlice probs, and the ONLY thing that worked was the natural method...except i mixed up Teatree, eucalyptus and peppermint oil with olive oil, left on head over night(wrapped up in a crappy old towel and gave her a crappy old pillow), then after combing all the critters out I massaged a little bit of the oil in every day to keep them at bay.Worked a treat....her hair looks fab, and none of mine have had them in the 18 monthe since!

I have to add something to this. My sister has a problem with Nits.

She hates the buggers. My neice used to get them all of the time. But 9 months ago, My Sis stopped using anything and just chose to comb & condition. She did it every day for 1 week and my neice has been nit free for 9 months. Every sunday she still conditions/combs.

Natural method worked very well for us. Plonking them in front of a videa while we did it helped to pass the time, and it is quite intensive if you or the children have long hair.

Very cheap, not nasty smells and they never get immune to being squished
