My dd after having chicken pox in april developed some really bad spots, like boils in size which caused some awful scars. We were told by various gp's that it was
a) infected chicken pox
b) reoccurence of chicken pox
c) molloscum
d) like impetigo but not impetigo

it cleared up after two lots of anti biotics. It occured again a couple of months later and then occured in her twin a couple of months after that. She now has it again, so three times since April with her twin having it once.
My Gp has admitted he doesn't know what it is, but treats it with anti b's as these seem to work, but obviously it is reoccuring so maybe they are not irradicating it completely.
They start as pimples, with a very tiny black dot in the middle, they then progress to having a large red area around the pimple where the skin looks infected. They then errupt into a huge spot like a boil and then after a couple of weeks fade away leaving a big purple scar. They are also incredibly painful and causing my dd quite a bit of distress. i was worried initially about the scarring but to be honest over the summer months, lots of exposure to sunlight has led the scars to fade significantly.
Lots of teachers, friends and family have all had a look and all above conditions and suggestions have been ruled out, does anyone have any idea what this is??
Should I push for the GP to investigate this further?
I would really appreciate any ideas at all thanks for reading

Oh and last time she had about 50 of these, and this time it has been preceded by anupset stomach, which is probably just a coincidence but am mentioning it anyway!

Ask to be referred to a paediatrician or dermatologist ASAP. If the GP doesn't know what it is and he can't treat it properly, it's beyond his level of expertise.

Thanks fio and yeahbut, think I will go back to Gp on monday

If the spots reoccur before your appointment with a specialist, take photos of them at different stages so they know what they are dealing with.

TwigTwoolett · 20/10/2006 18:23

antibiotics would not clear up psoriasis nor molluscum

agree you need a dermatologist recommendation

Quadrofiendia · 20/10/2006 18:28

I will take photos thats a good suggestion, I'm glad others feel a referal is a good idea, my dp thinks i'm making a fuss as they are just spots, but there is something not right about these and i just want to know what they are.

I would imagine (but don't know) its a fungal infection and the anti-b's are surpressing but not destroying it

good luck in dermatologist referral they're like gold-dust .. not enough in the UK

Quadrofiendia · 20/10/2006 18:33

That does sound a likely possibility Twig, thanks for the luck I am probably going to need it!

My DDs molluscum looked very innocuous most of the time but periodically would flare up to produce infected boil like spots with pussy weepy centres. Antibiotics would clear the infection and the spot would then disappear until the next bout of infection. In the life cycle of molluscum the inflamation phase is usually prior to the spot healing and going away totally but this can happen many times until the virus is overcome by the immune system. My money is on molluscum. Good luck.xx

Quadrofiendia · 20/10/2006 19:38

thanks for your comments 2nd time, really don't think it is molluscum though as skin is completely clear inbetween and GP didn't seem to think so at last appt. What you say is interesting though as does sound similar.

We have recently got private medical cover through my dp's work, so i guess we could use it if we have to. Thanks for letting me know that Fio

mystery spots have been identified and no need for a referal after all, a clever gp diagnosed as a staphlycoccal (you knop what i mean) infection, he said it would seem she is a carrier and that picking her nose (she is terrible) doesn't help. She has some nasal stuff to kill the bugs up her nose and some anti biotics, hopefully this time will be the last.
