Abnormal Smear, High Grade. Utterly terrified.

Got the letter this afternoon. Completely overtaken with fear. Scared to go to sleep and paranoid about every twinge anywhere in my body. I've only been married six months and was going to start ttc soon. Feel like I've been hit with a steam roller. Surely I'm overreacting? Any positive outcomes from this?

Sorry to hear you are going through this. I had an abnormal smear many years ago. A bit of painless laser treatment and all was fine. Have they said anything about what happens next eg back to GP or hospital referral?

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 01/02/2015 07:36

Ok,its totally awful to get an abnormal result but the chances are you are totally fine. I had something similar a while ago, had a colposcopy which said everything was fine.

You are almost certainly fin . Has the letter said what the next steps are??

I remember feeling awful when I got that letter; so scared and thought I was going to die dramatic. I went for colposcopy and had a biopsy. It was a bit unpleasant but didn't take long. It really helped me to talk to friends and they all either knew someone who'd had it done, or had it done themselves. Might be a good idea to take a friend with you.

Nothing happened with my first colposcopy but on my next smear they found abnormal cells again and I went for another colposcopy and they did a LLETZ which was fine. This time it was easier.

I know how horrible and scary it is to get that letter but it's quite common and you'll feel better soon Flowers

Bless you, it's so scary getting a letter like that.

My best friend had a very abnormal smear 12 years ago, she's had a colposcopy and had yearly smears for five years after that. Now she is back to three yearly smears. She has needed no other treatment and I doubt you will either, go and see your GP and ask him/her to talk you through the fears.

Remember, smears generally pick up very early signs of cells which might turn cancerous if left. You are not leaving it, you have had your smear and you will now be followed up and you will have any treatment needed to ensure these cells are removed.

About 10 years ago I had CIN III which is the most severe stage of dysplasia. I had the cells removed via a loop diathermy. Was on annual smears for many years but just been put back to 3 yearly ones. Even with that grade, my doctor said it is still 'precancer' and without treatment may turn in to cancer in 10 years, it may not. I went on to have 2 children and had no further treatment.

The main thing is this has been found and can be treated. Good luck!

its bloody well not a nice letter to get, had same a decade below. I had a cone biopsy which was basically a chargrillling of my poor cervix to burn off the bad cells. i went on to have 2 children. I have smears every 2 years and they have all been clear luckily as i smoke a few fags and need to stop

wish you the best x

Hi, I'm going through similar…also terrified. Trying to calm my mind but I just can't…thinking of the symptoms I've been getting etc and over thinking everything. Driving myself a bit potty tbh.

I had an abnormal smear in December. Had a colposcopy (which wasn't as bad as i was imagining) Jan 7th. Just had results from that on Thursday which says i have CIN3 and need to go in for LLETZ treatment this Wednesday. Also advises I bring a relative or close friend with me..is that usual?

I know the chances that I actually have cancer cells there are slim…but I cannot help but think the results from the LLETZ will show up cancer. I just cannot wait to get it over with and get the results. It's going to be another long 2/3 weeks.

Hope you're ok? I'm assuming you have an app for colposcopy?

quellerosiel · 01/02/2015 17:28

Thanks ladies. Great to hear positive outcomes.

I dont have a colposcopy appointment yet but will be getting one. Ringing GP tomorrow to get referral sorted sharpish (also hate the hospital they will refer me to so nipping that one in the bud sharpish!)

Funniest thing is i actually teach medical students about this kind of thing so was well placed to be completely calm but still freaked out!

Just updating as there doesn't seem to be many of these threads with an update on here!

All turned out fine, had a biopsy on Wednesday (thank goodness for my epic GP and a quick referral!) which was a bit painful but over VERY fast. Had some minor cramping for the rest of the day and some icky discharge but nothing to worry about.

The magic words were "Definitely no cancer!"

PHEW!!!

Really glad to hear that.

Priceypizza · 07/02/2015 00:11

Excellent news op, you must be so relieved!

Runmamarun · 27/02/2015 11:38

Great news op! I just had my LLetz results back that show only CIN3 and all removed so just need a smear in 6 months … relief, phew!
