Post surgery - slow recovery and ache all over - any tips

I am 7 weeks post an open abdominal myomectomy . So far so good and back to work (ish)

However my whole body seems to ache and I wondered if this is normal?

Pre surgery I did a lot of power walking and easily carried heavy weights . Now I

Can't sit for too long in normal chair
Can't run , oh no
If I even look at a heavy bag my back aches this is the biggest issue
Driving hurts
Have done a few long walks then I get massive thigh pain

I wondered if people had experienced same after major surgery and if they had any tips to get robust again

It's almost getting embarrassing now as people expect to be healed

Thanks !

Hi,
Sorry to hear that you are having these problems. I don't have any experience with surgery but I do suffer from heavy periods. The Black seed oil (nigella sativa) helps with heavy periods and made them more manageable. It helps for any kind of problem. I have the oil cold pressed one and take half a teaspoon in the morning and half a teaspoon in the evening just 3-4 days prior to my period.

Sounds as if your core muscles have taken a battering. Could you join a rehab Pilates class or get some physio arranged? One to one would be best IMO to help identify and work on the muscle groups that are weakened.

Hope you feel better soon.

thanks- think a 1:1 pilates session could be a very good idea. However have relaxed a bit and realised that this is actually normal, and need to be patient. that said any tips all recieved gratefully!

7 weeks is early for open abdominal surgery. I tell patients to expect to take 3 months before feeling anything like back to normal and 6 months before completely full recovery (and longer for bigger operations). Doesnt mean you wont be able to work or do normal things in that time, just that you may get tired early etc. As long as there is continued improvement and no specific pains or symptoms then I wouldnt worry.

it can take up to 3-4 years to fully recover from major surgery (the GA alone can take 6 months to get out of your system) - if you are back at work already you are doing pretty well - patience!

After emergency bowel surgery it took me 14 weeks to get back to work part time and 22 weeks full time. I was mentally ready by then though not physically (but to be fair I have continuing issues). Be kind to yourself, do pilates if you like to be active but pace yourself.
