So, the post has just arrived & my letter from the hospital says that it is reassuring that a biopsy came back normal but that the scan has shown multiple fibroids & I'll need a hysteroscopy. (Auto-correct changes it to hysterically; how apt.)
Back story; I had breast cancer and a mastectomy 2 years ago.
I've also had the end of my leg shortened by an inch, a bone graft in & a full ankle fusion 8 months ago after an accident 3 years ago.
I've had 7 operations in 3 years, I've lost my top of my field job & have just started to walk again.
I can't begin to contemplate being on the treadmill of tests & waiting for results again. I'm panicking & gone into the shakes. DH is working this weekend & kids friends are round to play in the snow.
Oh damn & blast it all to bits.

Oh Frances after all you have been though fibroids are nothing . Annoying and a massive pita but harmless xxx I just had mine taken out

Are you getting discomfort from them first of all ? As they are benign and only need addressing when they cause problems

The people who wrote letter might have no idea of what you have Brent though

Just to say DO NOT panic this is a walk in the park compared to cancer and you need to understand why they want to operate , if you want surgery and then assess recovery time

You have had a tough few years Flowers

FrancesNiadova · 31/01/2015 17:53

Paris-Berlin & Woodsman, thanks. I've calmed down a bit now, baked cakes & poured a Bailey's. I'm just panicky about the whole process again I suppose.

Don't blame you op . Def clam down and then discuss management as if they really don't bother you , you don't need surgery . And what they suggested is a lighter one - with average three weeks recovery time . Good luck ! X

mumznet · 31/01/2015 23:07

try black seed oil (nigella sativa) it helps with all kinds of problems. I take the oil (cold pressed) 3-4 days before my period to help with period problems. give it a go and see if it helps.

FrancesNiadova · 31/01/2015 23:13

Thanks for the advice. I've not told DH yet, I know I'm going to have to, but I really don't want to worry him. He's coped with so much the past few years, the poor s°d needs a break from it.

Please have a meeting and get data on

why are they advising this surgery- and scaring you with these bloody letters!!
whats the recpovery time
what happens if you DONt have it (as fibroids are benign)
are there less invasive options
can you wait given your reasons in the OP

in general if they are saying this, the only step is a scan to measure them and then a decision. It can take MONTHS for fibroid surgery as non critical, compared to cancer which is obviously critical

I dont know your back history obvs but I would hope you stay calm and NOT panic

have you got any symptoms from these fibroids? usually its extra heavy periods, bloating, fatigue, bladder and fertility issues

wishing you the best Flowers

FrancesNiadova · 01/02/2015 12:47

I'm on every couple of weeks, for a couple of weeks. It is draining.
They advised me to have an endometrial ablation 18 months ago, but after my accident & 2 related operations, then BC diagnosis & lymph node op them mx, I decided that if it wasn't critical, then I'd not have any surgery that wasn't absolutely necessary. My Dr & the nurse said that it would make my quality of life better, but I knew that I still had more major ankle & breast surgery to have, so I said no.

Hello I had a hysteroscopy and fibroid re-section before Christmas under GA. Was terrified of the GA. It was fine.

Just to prepare you, my re-section was one of the ones that didn't work and when I came round the doctor indicated I will need a hysterectomy. I haven't yet had a follow up appointment, where I intend to check all my options, and that they don't do anything for their convenience.

Having been mainly worried about the GA, it was a bit of a bummer to hear this news to say the least. But my sister had a hysterectomy just before Christmas (coincidentally) and is in good shape now.

Obviously, I hope this isn't what you will be faced with, but I thought it was worth mentioning so you are armed with as many questions before you get your hystoroscopy done.

Frances
Ask about the mirena coil as it's meant to stop periods and in many cases really helps . I only had my op as it was so large I looked pregnant and was wetting myself all the time . Keep us posted

FrancesNiadova · 01/02/2015 17:41

I don't think that I can have Mirena because it's hormonal & I've had breast cancer.
Thanks for the advice, it has been so good being able to talk about it.
I suppose that I automatically think worst-case scenario now, thanks for keeping me grounded!
Best wishes with your surgery tobee Flowers

There are other options. The standard way of treating them was to whip the whole thing out. There's now different procedures to shrink them, such as uterine arterial embolisation or medication. You could take the wait and see approach too. Don't feel as though you should have a hysterectomy, it's major surgery and once it's removed there's no going back.

I have an appointment with a surgeon to discuss a myomectomy at the end of the month.

FrancesNiadova · 01/02/2015 18:26

Best wishes with your surgery LadySybil.
I really don't want a hysterectomy, I've had a mastectomy & don't want my last bit of my femininity chopping off. How to explain that though.
Got to go now, DH has just walked in from work and has got to go & sort the water out. We're on a spring & it's been off all day.

Hi,
have you heard of black seed oil, cold pressed (nigella sativa) many people have cured cancer so I am thinking it can even work to shrink fibroids. look into this. me and my son take this oil regulalrly (son takes tablets daily for allergies) I take it for period problems,

HTH
take care

FrancesNiadova · 01/02/2015 19:33

Thanks mumz, I'll look into that. I've been in meltdown since getting that letter yesterday & suggestions like thus are keeping my mind grounded as much as anything.
I can't discuss this with DH because he's been though such a lot with me in the last 3 years. He's up the hill fixing the water in the snow after a day at work, bless him. If I talk to

FrancesNiadova · 01/02/2015 21:04

Sorry, if I talk to my Mum, everyone will get a phone call to say how worried she is & how she's not sleeping. I can't talk to DH because he worries about me constantly now, & I don't want him bogged down with any more of it, especially if it's all going to be fine. It's just waiting for yet more tests, waiting for yet more results & needing even more surgical procedures, in the 1 feminine part of me that I have left. Arrgh, I'm angry now & could scream.

Frances

It's makes me sad to see you so distraught ! Compared to cancer fibroids ain't jack shit . Loads of options and no one can force you to have surgery. Sounds like you are still vv fragile after recent turbulent events.

For your own sake calm down , vent here and don't panic !! Hysterectomy is for worst cases they ain't gonna whip your wb out for spurious reasons.

When is your next meeting ?

FrancesNiadova · 02/02/2015 19:10

I don't know, I'm waiting to hear about an appointment. I'm not going to say anything to DH until I get a date.
