Can norovirus be psychosomatic?

Ok, so the obvious answer would be no. However, yesterday I found out that a close family member has a brain tumour. We have to wait for more tests etc but because of where it is, the prognosis won't be good.

Obviously devastated, held it together for the kids and literally got them into bed at seven (they're 3 and 1) when the stomach cramps and sickness and diarrhoea started. I was in the bathroom pretty much on and off from then until 2am this morning. It was vile. I've had noro before (going back a couple of years) but that's the only thing I can think this was.

So - is it possibly a stress reaction or just incredibly bad coincidental timing?
TIA.

It's not Norovirus but stress can cause intestinal upset. You may not be ill you're body is just reacting to the stress.
I'm very sorry about the sad news Thanks

I have IBS and I get all of those symptoms if it is a particularly bad attack. The nausea is an optional extra, in that I don't always get that. My IBS is also mainly triggered by stress, so I would suspect that that was the cause rather than anything else.

I suppose the only difference is that mine is very quick onset, very violent and goes away just as quickly.

Thanks for the replies. I've never had IBS but it was certainly rapid onset and now I think there's nothing left inside. It was just the timing that made me think there could be more to it.

Since IBS can be stress related and food poisoning and norovirus aren't then I guess IBS is more likely

seaoflove · 30/01/2015 19:20

Extreme stress and anxiety can absolutely cause diahorrea and vomiting. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with IBS or norovirus.

alternatively, a sudden shock can lower your immune defences.

I know nothing about the sickness but wanted to say sorry tohear about your family member, II also had a close member of my family diagnosed with a brain tumour and I remember the shock and dread well. Hope you are feeling better and they have a positive outcome, look after yourselves, it's not an easy road.

Norovirus isn't the only virus capable of causing D&V but it's the one people will immediately think of. There is rotavirus, sapovirus, calicivirus, adenovirus among the many others that can cause diarrhoea. The fact that you've never suffered IBS before leads me to think that you've had some kind of infection. Don't forgot that you'll have been incubating the infection anyway before you got the bad news so it's probably just co-incedental

Thanks for all your kind words.
