For anyone experiencing back pain it can be a terrifying time. What is wrong? Who can help? How long will this last? We,on this thread are here to support you;offer empathy and help to navigate the almost impossible task of getting a diagnosis and the right treatment. We are not doctors but people who have trodden this path slowly and painfully. We also chat a LOT and welcome all newcomers. It is strictly non competetive regarding pain and no niggle is too minor.Smile

Those who have long term back problems know that the best way to help manage back pain is to internet shop for shoes, bags, and back support devices. Those who are new to back pain, these are important lessons to learn. And here within this thread is where you will learn those lessons.

You will also find other helpful advice on pain management, different treatment options from hydrotherapy and physio to surgery, experiences of others navigating the big and scary medical world, both private and NHS (and abroad from the UK) too, as well as issues around work, being a parent while managing pain and disability, and the impact on the relationships around us. Not to mention the pain of dealing with claiming disablity benefits. Sad.

Between us all, we have a huge wealth of knowledge and experience, and more than the practical advice, the jargon and information, we know what back pain is like, how much is affects everything around us, and sometimes, all we need is to have people listen who Get It.

We talk painkillers regularly, sometimes drink Wine Shock, have hot water bottles and wheat bags galore, and hold hands a lot. It's potentially all very Unmumsnetty as we do actually show some lovin' from time to time, although we Never Ever call each other hun.

If you have advice, need advice, need a hand to hold, want to do some shopping, then come in. We are friendly. We talk a lot. Come in, have a Brew and say hello Smile

Previous thread for anyone interested

Well the nails girl was trying to convince me to try the eyelashes so I could have both soon! Grin

No Matilda I have been very naughty - I am off to do it now. I had my moustache done years ago and yes it hurt like hell! Still have to pluck a few bits but overall a lot less Hitler

Berrie · 13/02/2015 15:45

Hmmm THE RAT was at the back and the mouse or baby rat is at the front so there is a whole house between them. What do non field mice live in? Is it a hole? I am not entirely sure that it is worth blocking the vent in the porch since the bottom half of the door has dropped off and we have replaced the broken glass with polythene. Grin See what a mansion I live in!? In our defense we have been waiting three years Hmm to sort out the extension / sewer diversion and have been waiting for that. We got planning permission a couple of weeks ago and I emailed some builders today. Shock Once we have some quotes we will know how much we need to borrow and can then either abandon it or try and increase the mortgage quick before DH possibly gets made redundant

Ok ladies, an update:

  1. I haven't bought the dungarees yet but it's starting to feel inevitable!
  1. I can't get a private appointment with my chosen consultant for at least 5 weeks
  1. I have, however, managed to get an appointment with another neuro consultant for Monday! The issue here is that I can't find anyone who has any firsthand experience of him. He's relatively young, trained in the states for a while and is big into sport injury related spinal surgery. I'm going to give him a go and see what he says. Perhaps then I will get second opinion.

Thank goodness it's Friday Wine

MatildaTheCat · 13/02/2015 17:03

Smeegle it's good that you are seeking another opinion. Being young isn't necessarily a bad thing. He may well still be at the 'Very Careful and Thorough' stage. Which would be good. I would recommend trying the injections. If they are successful in reducing your pain it gives you breathing room in which to try to recover an consider your options. Last year we had a poster on here who had a horrific disc prolapse literally straight after giving birth. Because of her situation surgery was't really an option and she struggled through and even bf. Just at the point she was about to have the surgery she began to recover and has done very well indeed.

One strong word of caution : don't buy dungarees Grin. We forgive you, you are unwell and under the influence of strong drugs.Wink

Berrie, I see your point. Very exciting re extensions. I love it when other people have the builders in. Will you be asking for seperate accommodation for your rodent friends or simploy welcome them in and bow to the inevitable. Smile I have my tiler in...watch out for sexy tile pic coming up. Very happy that the kitchen is nearly finished.

I shall only accept quotes from builders who can guarantee NO HOLES!

Berrie · 13/02/2015 17:21

Are the tiles actual mother of pearl or mop effect?

MatildaTheCat · 13/02/2015 17:22

I'm not sure about authenticity but very pretty. Almost finished.

Hello again ladies, just a quick update. DH slept in the bed for a whole two hours last night which was a huge improvement. Today he says the hideous pain has subsided to a dull ache for which he is very grateful. Not sure if it's the amitriptiline kicking in or just nerve settling, but we'll take it! Could be the Christmas cake liqueur.
His friend who is some kind of sports therapist told him to lie down in a sort of foetal position, which extended his lower back and definitely helped with the pain.

Shmeegle, I would recommend taking the injection, it made a huge difference to Dh's recovery. I know they don't fix underlying problems but definitely can buy you some time!

And also would recommend you get a second opinion regarding the use of dungarees! Grin

MatildaTheCat · 13/02/2015 18:50

Marceline may I suggest that your DH keeps up his current drug regime regardless of his improved pain levels. I was advised to do this when I was newly diagnosed and I think it helps. I now stick to regular meds even if I'm ok at the time. And do not let him do more than rest, potter, rest and definitely no sitting! Keeping the agony at bay is paramount.

But good news that things have settled a little.

Berrie, you say Rat at the back and 'mouse' at the front. Have you considered what might be going on underneath your house? Grin

An Empire. A continent... If you put your ear to the ground can you hear anything? < I am joking. Have no wish to cause distress>

PavlovtheCat · 13/02/2015 20:18

I sleep in the foetal position even now, it's been the most comfortable position I have found when I have had leg pain. I feel quite lost post surgery when I could only lie on my back for a few days!

He might also find that wedging a fusion under the base of his knees once he is in the foetal position helps as it aligns him a bit and stops his knees from dropping forward and twisting his back. And just one pillow under his head.

allypally999 · 14/02/2015 09:52

Finally got some sleep through the coughing - was almost sleep-deprived/drugged up enough to buy dungarees?! Grin

Matilda we want pics of those tiles

Might try foetal position but legs a lot better last night - sadly neck not so much but hey ho! Sad

schmeegle · 14/02/2015 10:40

Berrie · 14/02/2015 14:01

Well I had read 70s fashions were coming back... Ds (blond, blue eyes innocent, butter wouldn't melt--)used to look really cute in dungarees! I like all in ones (for me- being short) but they are tricky with a dodgy back - all that reaching for the shoulders to pull up after each loo stop. Are the dungarees orange smeegle?
Dh has been looking at what to put in our new to us barn. (I was thinking sensory room for ds, or a utility space- or perhaps a dining room - do people actually use dining rooms?) Dh came across swimming spas! Its a (pipe) dream - but I think the idea is brilliant! You get adjustable jets (and variable heat so it can be warm or cool) that you swim against so the 'pool' can be short, so it will fit into a garage or garden (or barn). I love the idea! Pity about the price. I wonder if you could get reduced VAT if it could be classed as therapy for poorly backs?
Hope marcelines dh is a little better today. That awful stage of unbearable pain every moment is very difficult to live through. He has my sympathy. Dh uses walking poles when his back ceases up, (a trick he learnt from me- make sure they lock securely - some don't) but it can be hard on your wrists. But that's only when movement becomes possible again. Rest first.
Berrie I wonder if a hamster would repel all other rodents?
Hope the weekend started well for everyone.

schmeegle · 14/02/2015 21:34

Oh berrie I already have option #2 Grin!!!

schmeegle · 14/02/2015 21:36

maggiso green with envy at the thought of a swimming spa!
