Borderline thyroid test- what does this mean?

I have regular thyroid blood tests because I take lithium. I've been in what I thought was a low, depressed mood for a while now and nothing seems to shift it (upped antidepressants).

My psychiatrist told me to get thyroid function checked as I have also gained weight and am utterly exhausted all the time.

My mum had an over active thyroid and two of her sisters have an under active.

I've been told to come back in 3 months for a retest by receptionist.

Your psychiatrist will be aware that sustained use of lithium will often lead to suppression of normal thyroid function, so both he and your GP should be on the look out for this. As well as that you have a family history, so thats two risk factors.

Being borderline hypothyroid is rather like being a little bit pregnant. Either you are hypothyroid or you arent. Go back and talk to your GP point out the risk factors and ask him what he plans to do now you have symptoms as well. At the same time, get a print out of your results, with the reference range, for your own information and also so you can stick them on here or one of the thyroid forums, if you want more information and support.
