Today in hospital they prescribed AB's for ds for his chest infection. I could hear the consultant saying to the junior doctor to go for a bigger dose than is common because ds is a big baby.
On checking the leaflet at home I saw that not only ds has been prescribed a dose that is recommended for babies over one year, but also that it says babies under six months shouldn't have these AB's at all, and to take them to the doc's if they accidentally swallow it at under six months. On the other hand ds is heavier than some six month old babies...
would you just go with what they said or ring back and double-check?

Check check and check!

And get your ds some pro-biotics too, he'll need them!

emkana · 18/10/2006 21:28

Where/how do I get pro-biotics for a four month old baby?

OP posts:
7up · 18/10/2006 21:28

def check, ive done it before

TwigTwoolett · 18/10/2006 21:33

From what I can see on a quick search it is not that it is unsafe for infants just that it has not been tested which unfortunately happens because who could test it?

It is based on dosage per kilo weight of child ..

I would double-check still but wouldn't worry unduly

emkana · 18/10/2006 21:34

Thanks twig
How did you find that info? Because I was going to google for info but didn't know what to look for.

OP posts:
TwigTwoolett · 18/10/2006 21:35

I always google on brand name PLUS drug name (for adults I tend to do contraindication too) but for this case I did Infant

TwigTwoolett · 18/10/2006 21:37

beansontoast · 18/10/2006 21:39

damm twig...youre good!

emkana · 18/10/2006 23:01

I agree, beansontoast!

Don't know whether to just reduce the dose to what it says in the leaflet for a six month old baby...

OP posts:
Piffle · 18/10/2006 23:15

I know they do adjust drugs for weights, dd being the other end of the weight sacle has had ab's and painkillers reduced due to her weight - she is 4 which would put her up for dtronger doses, but weighs as much as my friends sturdy 15 mth old...
Have you been able to check with anyone Emkana?

emkana · 18/10/2006 23:16

Not yet, I was thinking of phoning in the morning before he is due his first dose.
