All thyroid related?

Hi
Hoping someone will have some advice for me. Two years ago I lost weight very rapidly and had awful palpatations after many vists to Drs I was eventually diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis due to large antibody count. All good but have never felt well since

I have also seen rhuemotolgy these are my symptoms
Pain in joints
Muscle aches
Fatigue
Raynauds
Pins and needles in hands/feet
Diarreah
Easy bruising
Stretch marks
Eye floaters
Numbness in hands esp during the night

I have a positive ana and fluid in my joints seen by a ultrasound. I feel really unwell and at a loss. I also have low bit d and low federation despite having been on ferrous sulphate tabs for best part of a year.

Rhuemotolgy wants to put everything down to Hashimoto but I don't feel it all is? Sorry for the essay and typos. Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Sorry terrible typos

Federation should be ferritin

It sounds entirely possible that this rag bag of symptoms may be due to your thyroid, but to come to a firm conclusion, we would need to unpick the whole thing, as they are non-specific enough to be potentially due to other things. I did this exercise after my CFS diagnosis and am now well. Here goes?

What are your current thyroid results like?
What medication are you on?
How low in range is your ferritin/vitamin B12/ vitamin D? If you are on levothyroxine and your vits and mins are low, that can stop it working.

If your ferritin is not rising, despite taking ferrous sulphate, and you have muscle and joint pain and diarrhoea, you need to get tested for coeliac disease, which is also auto immune and therefore connected to Hashimotos.

Have you had B12 checked?

Tubbytimmy · 21/01/2015 15:10

im not 100% sure of my thyroid test results b12 was considered normal ferritin was 6 levothyroxine is prescribed at 50mg which is stupidly low I know. I did have a blood test for coeliac which again was considered normal.

OK. Your doctor may consider results to be normal if they come back within the reference range, but there is a lot of difference between normal and optimal. Your B12 needs to be over 500 to avoid neurological damage, which manifests itself as pins and needles or loss of sensation. Your ferritin is incredibly low and probably below the reference range. An infusion would be the quickest way to fix that, if your GP will refer. 50mxg of thyroxine is not even a starting dose for a person under 50 with no cardiac issues. Your TSH should be down at the bottom of the reference range and your FT4 and FT3 near the top, but you might need T3 adding to your thyroxine until that ferritin is back at a healthy level.

It is possible to get a false negative on a test for coeliac. Have you considered whether you might have gut damage from another source inhibiting absorption? You might want to look into trying gluten free for a while and see if it makes any difference. If you’re hard core, have a look at the auto-immune protocol diet. I have seen that do wonders for people with Hashis.

Thank you rockin. I will ask for a print out of my last results and look what is what. I'm very sure there is something a miss with my guts as I always have loose stools. Hashimoto would make me constipated as I understand?.

Not sure how much the go would help, appointments with a endo didn't go much better originally I was sent back to go with the instructions of medicating me when my tag reached 10 and they know the low dose isn't doing a thing as my antibodies are still in the thousands.

Go = Gp
Tag= tsh

Sorry, I'm posting on my phone

My experience is that the only way to get through this is to read, learn and challenge.

I was basically written off by the NHS at 53 with a CFS diagnosis. I’ve basically had to fix myself and it’s been hard. There are thousands of us in this situation, mostly female and middle aged, which is probably why the scandal is allowed to continue.

Tubbytimmy · 22/01/2015 14:26

I agree, the problem is my gp treats any symptom as a stand alone so refers to this or that specialist which brings no results in terms of feeling well. I'm 29 now with four dc but feel like I'm 90.

Does hashi usually make for a positive ana?

That's because they are no longer trained to look at you and at the whole picture. You become just a series of numbers and nothing more.

I found that being referred for individual symptoms just meant that I was told there was nothing wrong with me.

I don't know anything about ana - sorry. Have you tried googling?
