DD has hurt her ankle A&E say no crutches but complete rest, so how she supposed to manage?

I can see the sense in no crutches because they like them to start using it tomorrow but surely it would be better to have crutches and be able to put weight through it gradually rather than hobble round.

How is she supposed to go to the bathroom? She is determined she's going to school tomorrow but they said plenty of rest.

Where can I find a pair of crutches?

Trying to get her into A&E was fun, pushchair + toddler + 14yr dd who couldn't walk. Nurse must have heard her screaming and brought a wheelchair (bless her)

I would get the crutches and use them to help her along.

Sorry, but that's just bollocks and completely unrealistic to expect someone not to get out of bed unless absolutely necessary.

FFS, how backwards!

I completely ruptured my ACL and was using my leg between the time of the injury and surgery - about 1 week.

She doesn't need crutches, she should ( ideally ) rest with it up and only put weight through it when she has to such as when she needs to loo, goes to bed.
If its a sprain then try using an ice pack when shes resting it to help with the swelling and to gently rotate the foot clockwise and back again a few times every hour.
Even though it hurts like hell she can put her weight through it.!
Try anti inflammatories for the pain.

DS2 has just injured his knee and he was provided with crutches by A&E, but with instructions to ensure he bears weight on the injured leg whilst using them. He is gradually putting more and more weight on the leg and hopefully will be able to get about without the crutches soon.

Seems ridiculous to me to expect someone to hobble around with a leg they can't use properly without some means of support.

I used crutches to avoid limping, which is just as bad if not worse.

Sorry, but if it hurts, your body is going to try to compensate.

By 'crutches', I had those stick thingies.

This helped me walk w/normal range of motion rather than limping and causing even more damage.

She can also try moving the foot around herself to prevent stiffness.

Sadly, I have a loooonggg history of leg injuries - from breaking my foot and ankle and tearing all the ligaments in that ankle when I was 19, to rupturing my ACL and tearing most of the cartilage in my knees at 25.

mmm they didn't say what she'd done to it apart from it wasn't broken, did say in begining its probably ligament damage.

I still think that crutches would help to put weight through it gradually and she would be able to go back to school quicker atm there is no way she can go to school and she is yr 10 so kind of important that she gets the work.

That's how I used crutches, Freckle.

expatinscotland · 17/10/2006 16:28

I did ligament damage and now the damn thing is my 'trick' ankle.

It sprains dead easily, even w/lots of physio to try to strenthen it.

The crutches helped me maintain normal ROM (range of motion).

I did keep it up lots whilst it was swollen, but I moved it on my own a lot b/c it gets SO stiff if you don't.

Did they refer her for physio?

If not, see your GP, who can also refer her.

longwaytogo · 17/10/2006 20:14

no no referal to physio but they did say if it doesn't get better then go back to A&E or GP for poss physio referal.

But now really peeved off with A&E had phone call at tea time regarding thumb injury on Fri which was xray on sat am.

Wanted us to go back as xray had been reviewed and could we go back so take the 20min journey for doctor to look at her hand and say she hasn't got pain in right place, what the xray says is base of thumb joint has dislocated so now wants us to go back in morning to see senior doc. Why didn't they just tell us to go in morning anyway.

They were really confused though when they were reviewing her thumb and she hoping around because of today's injury to her ankle.
