Anyone had a cataract removed?

My dad is having his done on Monday but he is blind in the other eye so it will be a bit difficult at first.

Any advice? How long will it be before he can see? Is it very painful? He has to have injections in his eye (which cause cataracts but the alternative was blindness) which can be very painful and we dont know what to expect from this.

Any advice or tips would be very welcome :)

DM has had both eyes done on separate occasions under local anaesthetic. Blurred vision for a day or so, at least a week before she could drive last time. She was advised not to be alone for the day afterwards. Not overly painful iirc but the injection was the worst part.

Both my mum and brother have had cataracts done. My brother had very few problems and could see clearly within a day, my Mum hasn't fared so well, however she is 94 and has problems with her other eye. After 6 weeks she now has new glasses and can read reasonably well but she quite often finds her vision is blurry in the morning and clears over the day.

Thats good to hear that the injection is probably the worst bit, he is used to those!

I think my post might have sounded a bit negative. I do think it's a worthwhile operation and I do know my mum is a bit prone to finding the worst in everything.

Dont worry Elli!

Dad is 63 and reasonably healthy (well, apart from the COPD, being blind in one eye, profoundly deaf and being on the waiting list for toe joint replacement :o ), so hopefully he should be ok :)

Similar age to my brother then.

My DM has had both eyes done separately. A bit bloodshot and sore for a few days, she recovered remarkably well and is delighted. Both ops took a few hours, we dropped her off, hung around for a coffee for a bit and took her home.

I have had both mine done it was brilliant. Next day my eyesight was the best for years (worn bottle bottom glasses since I was 3) They corrected my myopia and now need glasses just for reading.
It was not painful at all, biggest problem was not talking whilst they "did" it.

Thanks all, thats really reassuring :)

Between us our extended family has had every type of surgery you can think of, including open heart surgery and bi lateral cochlear implants which are very rare. Yet somehow we have managed to miss the most common surgical procedure performed in the UK, so no direct experience!

Our main worry is how long he will be without sight, being blind in his other eye. Obviously we know this is unique to each patient but hopefully it wont be too long and it wont be painful for him.

Quick update...

it was fine :)

He has his sight almost back now although it is still a little blurry. He is very happy he had it done, he hadnt realised (as I suspected) that his sight had deteriorated so much because of it. Thankfully he gave his license up years ago due to other issues!

Thanks for the info and advice, it did help calm my mother down a bit!
