Possible arthritis in hip

Hi all,

After being in pain long term with my right hip, I've been diagnosed as having sciatica (spelling?) and possible arthritis. I'm being referred for an x - ray. The symptom that the GP is concerned about is that I'm unable to lift my right leg more then a few inches upwards when lying down, and there is a grinding like feeling. But I'm only 33, and concerned. I'm on ibuprofen and strong pain killers to help with the pain. Has anyone been in this situation, and got any advice?

Do you mean osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis?

I'm 35 and was diagnosed last year with rheumatoid arthritis.

I'm on prescribed anti inflammatory tablets.

I had this , you need to have an MRI not an XRay because the X-ray does not see inside the joint very well . I ended up having a hip arthroscopy, without it I would definitely have needed a replacement by now , it's not as common as a knee arthroscopy but Three years on and I still get a little pain but its given me a stay of execution

I saw a hip specialist orthopaedic surgeon this week. He said that in cases of osteoarthritis of the hip, the patient almost always complains of groin pain which radiates down the front of the thigh. An X-ray shows up basic anatomy and bony changes and an MRI will show much more detail ie any tears, cysts and wear and tear of the acetabulum and labrum. Remember that everyone has wear and tear.

Buttock pain which radiates down the back of the thigh is more likely sciatic pain. Do you have lumber pain? To look at nerve impingement there you would need a lumber MRI. Unfortunately even though these structures are so close, the hip man will refer you to your GP to be referred to the back man as it were. Nobody seems willing to look at the whole person.Sad
