One Testicle stories - only positive outcomes please....

Hi I have a DS2 (now 5) who had an undescended testicle. When he was operated on they found that his testicle was high up in his abdomen and that nothing had come of it. They removed what was there and now he only has one testicle. This was a few years ago but is playing on my mind of late as to whether he will be ok in the future and be able to father kids. The Consultant says he has a 5% decrease in sperm count due to having only one testicle which sounds good but I just want to hear some positive (if possible) stories of those dads who have managed to father kids with one testicle. Also my other DS1 had an undescended testicle which was operated on and they managed to bring his down - why did I have two sons with this problem. Asked consultant again and he did not have any answers for me. Does anyone have any answers as to why this would have happened to both boys.
Thanks

Can't help on the reasons why, but I know a chap who only has 1 testicle and 3 kids - hope that cheers you up

CorpseBrideOfJohnCusack · 17/10/2006 02:22

well I used to go out with somebody who only has one testicle and he has 2 children and one on the way at 32 so he hasn't had any problems!

no idea on reasons why - sorry

My DS had an undescended testicle too. Was operated on at almost 4 and he is 5 now. His is small (in fact I think both are small) and I do have some concerns of course. But my Mum's GP assured me that there are thousands of Dads out there with one testicle.

And in our case DS is the result of IVF as DH has two testicles but v. low sperm count. So I know that even if his chances are slightly lower than 'normal' he can still have children.

Am also sure that by the time our boys get to fathering children there will have been huge advances in fertility treatment (if necessary). I think there is already promising research being carried out on helping men with low/no sperm counts being able to produce sperm.

My dh had undecended testicles. He went on to have tseticular cancer and had one removed 13 years ago. It totly without that cancer now.

We conceived our two quite naturaly after the cancer and the op. Took us 3 months for the first and a year for the secons,,,,,and I was 33 with the first and 36 with the second. We have no problems

My BIL hit the spot first time with both his kids. No effort required, apparently!!!!!!!! (he has only 1 descended)

Bozza · 17/10/2006 09:33

DH had one undescended which for some reason wasn't picked up in childhood. He had it removed in his early 20s (because there is an increased risk of cancer if they are undescended). DS is 5 (two months to conceive) and DD is 2 (conceived first month of trying and we only had unprotected sex once) so obviously his fertility has not been affected at all.

I have no answers as to whether it is a genetic thing or just luck of the draw that both your DSs are affected.

I can always rely on my MN contacts to make me feel better. I should have done this a long time ago. Isn't it amazing how many men out there have only one testicle! Thanks so much for making me feel much better.

TBH flowertop I don't think they broadcast it! But I think it is actually quite common.

Kidstrack · 17/10/2006 14:50

my dad had only one after an accident when he was a boy about 13yrs old, he was climbing a tree and fell on to a branch and had to be operated on to remove one of his tesicles, he was told at 13yrs old because of the damage of the whole area where he had hurt that it was highly unlikey he would father a child, but he has gone on to have 4 children!

tassis · 17/10/2006 15:04

Don't know why this would happen, but Dh had testicular cancer - diagnosed 5 years ago. One testicle removed. We've had 2 LOs since then.

nailpolish · 17/10/2006 15:05

i too know of a man who has only ever had one testicle and he now has fathered 2 children

joanna4 · 17/10/2006 18:16

My hubby had one undescended testicle as a child we have 2 children conceived very easily.

Overtiredmum · 17/10/2006 18:23

I don't know the medical reasons why but my friend's DH only has one and was told at an early age that he would never be able to have children - he has a DS of 16 months and my friend gave birth on Saturday to their second.

Blu · 17/10/2006 18:29

A long-ago ex of mine only had one testicle. It wasn't noticable, and he certainly had no fertility issues - he's since been fathering children left right and centre.

So don't let your little lad grow up thinking he has anything to prove!!

Bozza · 17/10/2006 20:28

LOL at "fathering children left, right and centre". Presumably this is not what flowertop has in mind for her DS2.

CaptainCavemansMummy · 17/10/2006 20:40

Hi

my ds only has one testicle (he's only 2.5 though so not yet at the fathering kids stage!!).
Found it was undescended at 6 week check and never came down. Had surgery at 13 months and surgeon could only find a tiny lump of tissue which must have been the testicle but it never developed.
Now has a slightly largely than average testicle (aparently normal for boys with only one, the other one tries to compensate??). Consultant said no problems with fertility but the one he has got left is VERY precious. He gave us a letter so that if ds ever hurts his nether regions we can alert the surgeons to him potentially needing surgery on the precious one - and avoid waiting hours in A&E - as if he had a twisted testicle we would only have 4 hours before it was irreprably damaged.
sorry if long and rambling!!
Oh, and he can have a prosthetic testicle after puberty, should he choose to!!

tribpot · 17/10/2006 20:44

dh had an undescended testicle; he barely had to look at me for me to fall pregnant My bro was the same (not that he made me pregnant - eeeuwww!) but when he was a teen he had mumps and subsequently hasn't been able to have kids naturally, although has two adorable adopted kids.

Dh is obsessed (in non-dodgy way) with ds' testicles to ensure that both remain in a descended state! Now I think about it, his bro was the same, it obviously runs in families. Both have been able to father children, I think the main worry is more around a predisposition to testicular cancer.
