Is this sleep apnoea?

I've always been a snuffly breather through my nose at the best of times and often wake up feeling in no way refreshed (although that might also be due to having two young DC...). However, over the years I've realised that I often have dreams of being in the sea/ overcome by waves and that I have to hold my breath for long periods of time in the dream.

Could this possibly be an indicator of sleep apnoea or is this a relatively common thing even for those with properly functioning nasal passages? How likely is it that I'm holding my breath in real life while asleep?

I feel too embarrassed to mention this to a GP unless it's a 'thing'; otherwise I'm just wasting their time telling them about my recurring dreams...

I have sleep apnoea and one of the main symptoms was very loud snoring, then silence, then a snort before I started snoring again. Very ladylike! Do you have a partner who could observe you sleeping?

DH sleeps through anything including throughout my entire labour so is unable to tell me, unfortunately! I have been known to snore though.

You can download snoring apps which will record you, so that would be worth a try

Thanks, I'll give that a try (not looking forward to listening to myself honking and spluttering like a sailor though!).

Yes the apps are good, they record you through the night and even plot a graph of the snoring.
DH has had a sleep study done and is waiting for the results.
I can't help regarding the dreams, he never remembers any.

Can anyone recommend an app for snoring recording please? Mine is so loud and getting worse even when sitting up

A month old thread I know, but I just woke up yet again gasping for breath as you mention and I too have strange dreams. Mine usually involve being trapped around the chest, like I'm climbing out of a window and get stuck. I thought for a while it was my asthma but I'm now sure it's sleep
apnoea. It's terrifying and exhausting. My mum has a Cpap machine for hers but it feels so claustrophobic.

Fackinell - you can get different sorts of CPAP masks, and the nasal pillow ones are much less intrusive, so don't let that put you off having investigations and treatment if you need it

Thank you CMOT.
