Had a very mild case on and off since son was born (16wks) but last few days been unbearable, plus bit constipated. Your tried and tested solutions please?! (Apologies if i've put you off your breakfast / dinner etc!)

I would urge you to seek medical help from your GP and if the GP cannot help then I'd ask for a referral to a specialist. You do not have to put up with this.

Really? Is my bum broken forever otherwise?!

No of course it isn't. But getting checked by the GP might be a good idea. In the meantime, drink loads of water, eat lots of 'fibre' food - bran, fruit n veg etc, and avoid anything too spicy or rich. Have you been using any of the treatments from the chemist? There are various options now, and can be very effective.
Like you I had a mild case through pg and was worse after childbirth, which has pretty much gone away, though does have the occasional flare up.
It is possible to have surgical treatment in serious cases, but personally I would prefer to try other options first.
You have my sympathy though!

dh recommends anusol (which he made ME buy for him). never tried it though - too scared as it comes with a horrible proboscis thing.

juuule · 15/10/2006 09:50

Smear the Anusol on and push any protruding bits of your bum back inside. If you're very constipated try glycerine suppositories. Get your diet sorted out if it needs it. Lots of fluids, fruit, veg. Every time you have to strain a bit you might find it recurs for a while. Just apply the cream again. Great fun isn't it. And no, it's not broken forever.

EliBoo · 15/10/2006 10:29

Ditto to what juule says. Although an alternative way round is to push protruding bits back in under the shower, which my gp suggested: warm water is relaxing, and made me feel less squeamish first time (not bothered these days - yes, it will mend, but if you are pg again it'll probably break again!). And then apply Anusol afterwards....I always use Anusol HC, the other sort wihtout the HC is totally useless IME.

You don't have to use the nozzle if you do'nt want to, just smear it in and around...or buy Anusol suppositories, which are easiest inserted if you smear a bit of the cream or ointment on the end first. And be warned, they make your poo look weird with white bits the next day.

There you go, details aplenty...

Ah, juuUle......sorry, missed a u

EliBoo · 15/10/2006 10:31

Forgot - better, far better, than Anusol supps are Proctosedyl...but you have to get them on prescription, I think. Ask you gp for some, they worked fast for me after dd's birth!
