Is it bad to give Medised to a three month old?

I feel bad somehow giving it to ds.
I don't know why I feel that way, after all he's already had all sorts of medications, including several lots of antibiotics.
I think it's because it say it may cause drowsiness, it somehow feels like I'm really drugging him.

Phenergen and diphenhydramine (the mildly sedating antihistamine in Medised) are absolutely and entirely different things!

Medised is safe, but IME doesn't work. Wish it did!

wheelybug · 12/10/2006 23:06

Not sure about that dinny - but my thoughts are just based on a google search but they phenargan seems to be a brand name for something different. But I'm not a doctor either so will keep quiet !

Medulla · 12/10/2006 23:09

I agree emkana you have done the right thing, DH is a GP of many years and thinks medised is a good drug to use with congested babies/children. If you are still worried tomorrow go and speak to your GP as Gillian has recommended. Hope you all have a peaceful nights sleep

Gillian76 · 12/10/2006 23:10

And FWIW, my daughter had Phenergan from 4 months as she couldn't sleep due to horrendous eczema.

She's a very healthy 5 year old now

sorrell · 12/10/2006 23:11

That's great but there is no phenergan in medised.

mears · 12/10/2006 23:12

I am not sure how useful it will be to be honest but it will not be harmful as it is bought over the counter.

Medised of old used to contain phenergan and was only suitable for children over 2 years. The formulation has been changed and the antihistamine is different - hence why it can be bought over the counter.

I would tend to use something like Karvol or baby vick for congestion. Most cold remedies are not really that useful. I would give paracetamol for a temperature and don't think medised is particularly beneficial, but it is not harmful.

Gillian76 · 12/10/2006 23:12

'scuse me sorrell

Medulla · 12/10/2006 23:19

I think we've got our drug names mixed up Promethazine is the antihistamine present in both Medised and Phenergan, Diphenhydramine is the generic name for Benadryl.

sorrell · 12/10/2006 23:22

Nope. Definitely no promethazine in Medised. Got a bottle right here.

sorrell · 12/10/2006 23:23

But it doesn't make babies sleep better, sadly.

Medulla · 12/10/2006 23:25

here

curlew · 12/10/2006 23:26

It might ease any aches and pains, and might bring down a temperature if he's got one, but it won't do anything to stop the cold turning inot a chest infection, I'm sorry to say. Have you tried an oil burner or vaporiser with sone eycalyptus oil, or Olbas oli wafted around the room, or cool flanels for his head and feet? Hope you have an OK night - lots of cuddles seem to help too!

emkana · 12/10/2006 23:27

I know it can't work miracles, I have Karvol here as well and I am cuddling him
I was just having the faint hope that if he got a restful night's sleep it would help him fend it off better.

Medulla - tye Netdoctor link is out of date.

medised site

sorrell · 12/10/2006 23:29

I don't think there is any evidence it really helps sleep, but I hope your little boy has a good night anyway, poor mite.

mears · 12/10/2006 23:30

Emkana - according to this link it should help congestion. Let us know if it helps.

Medulla · 12/10/2006 23:31

I've just played around on google and depending what site you go on depends on which antihistamine is listed in medised! (One that is in phenergan and one that isn't)- what's going on? no wonder we're a bit confused (or at least I am)!!! I am off to find a BNF and read my own bottle too

Medulla · 12/10/2006 23:33

Yes thanks Sorrell just realised that, I know they took Medised off the shelf for a couple of years was this the reason?

emkana · 12/10/2006 23:34

Well he seems to be sleeping well so far and doesn't sound so snuffly.
Please keep your fingers crossed for me that he won't get another chest infection.

Fingers crossed for you and your boy. Hope you BOTH get a good night's sleep and he gets better soon.
I just didn't want Emkana to panic about phenergen, that's all. I'd have given my ds anything to get him to sleep - just never found medised worked!

Medulla · 12/10/2006 23:37

Good I'm glad he's settled down, hope you both get a good nights sleep.

mears · 12/10/2006 23:48

Glad he's sleeping soundly - hope he will be OK.

Medulla - infant Medised does not contain phenergan. The original formulation was withdrawn hence the confusion. See the things you learn on mumsnet!

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 13/10/2006 07:42

look, I am not trying to shock anyone, I said as much. When I tried to buy medised for my 1 yo I was told it did contain phenergen and that that was dangerous for under 2s, so I went home to look it up.

Can I clarify, infant medised does not contain phenergen or promethazine hydrochloride under any other name?

Cos if so, I am going to buy some.

Bamzooki · 13/10/2006 08:23

emkana - totally sympathise with you re each and every cold leading to chest infections. With ds i felt l like i had my own personal chair in the doctors waiting room, and I am one of the first to avoid unnecessary medication. Was told Ds has 'bronchiolitis' - in his case probably from inhaling meconium during birth, which i think combined with having narrowish 'tubes' makes it hard for him to clear his airways enough to avoid infection. However, since he has been prescribed an inhaler, this has largely become a thing of the past. It is an Atrovent inhaler (with a spacer obviously) which seems to keep his airways open enough for him to keep the mucus moving.
None of the above may be relevant to you - but thought I'd mention it just in case. And like I said - I know how hard it is.
good luck.
