Very itchy healing scars

I have some scars which are healing at the moment. The whole area they are on is very itchy, and I wondered if anyone knows of anything I can use or take which will cease them itching.

I've been using scar reduction cream from boots but it isn't helping the itchy, which is driving me mad.

Have you tried bio oil? Helped with me.

Hope you find some relief x

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 20:09

I've used it in the past to fade scars but don't have any in currently. I've never found them be this itchy before and it's driving me made!

Itchy is good, it means it healing properly.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 20:12

Does it? I did an online search and it did say that it was normal that it would happen. I'm worried if I keep scratching it I'll accidentally make it worse.

Pure oil of lavender.

Check you're not sensitive to it somewhere else first. You can use it neat or diluted in almond oil/bio oil. ( as long as they're not open wounds)

If you don't have any in, you could try chamomile teabags. Steep them in hot water, cool right down and apply the teabags to the scars. Don't use much water to steep them.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 20:17

I have camomile tea bags in. I'll try that. Thanks Grin

Perhaps the skin is itchy/dry because it's cold? Keep moisturised. Olive oil is just as good as Bio oil (assuming scars completely healed). Aveeno 24 hour moisturiser is very good too.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 20:31

Yes completely healed. They are only about 3 weeks old so newly healed, iyswim. I use moisturiser so I think the skin is quite well looked I think. It's just where the scars are.

I've had quite a few surgeries & yes it does itch like mad when it's knitting back together. The best relief I could find was to use my fingertips to draw a circle around the scar about a centimetre from the scar itself - seemed to confuse the nerve endings!

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 20:41

Trousers, as in itch around that circle or just draw the circle? It's multiple scars, covering a small area so might not be easy to itch a cm away unless I try really hard I suppose

Doesn't have to be too precise! Just a sort if tickle near the scar. I had 4 very close together once & just tickled anywhere near. Of course this assumes it's somewhere easy to reach!

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 21/12/2014 20:49

After my section I found gently slapping the itchy are really helped. and scratching a few cm away from the scar as mentioned above. Hope you heal well.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 20:50

Ok, will try that. Thank you. I've read online that it's a thing about depth of injury and severity of itchiness but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

It doesn't last long, fades from "maddening" to "occasional" quite quickly IME

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 20:54

Brill, thanks. I worried it was due to an infection but the walk in centre said no. I'll try some of these things.

Wotsitsareafterme · 21/12/2014 20:59

You could try taking piriton for the itching worth a try IMO

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 21:00

Good plan I hadn't thought of that.

TheOrchardKeeper · 21/12/2014 21:14

Keeping it cool and moisturized has always helped me Smile

If you can't help it try slapping the area (if it's not too deep a wound/s and it's healed enough) or like a PP said, just lightly rubbing/tickling that general area. Hope you feel less itchy soon!

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/12/2014 21:19

Thanks everyone. It's self harm scars, so not too deep, but I have open ones nearby so need can't get too slappy-happy. Never had it this itchy before.

OP posts:
TrousersRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 22/12/2014 11:47

Tickle treatment probably best then! Guess you've explored self-harm alternatives like pinging elastic bands or rubbing with ice.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 22/12/2014 11:56

Yes, lots of alternatives Sad

I've been tickling a lot and holding camomile tea bags on and both are working really well currently. I seem to just get one arm to stop itchy and then the other does, but it's better than it was yesterday.

Thanks
