DD (almost 1) vomiting every day for the last week

We've been to the GP and they suggest it's probably a virus. That's what I thought at first but it seems to be going on and on. It's strange too because she may go more than 24 hours without vomiting and then suddenly have a bout. I've noticed that what she's bringing up is very undigested, some food still in whole pieces that was eaten as long as 15 hours before. Is that normal?

She's lost weight too and I've had to buy a smaller nappy size. No upset tummy, still doing one or two poos a day.

She does have a number of food allergies (wheat, dairy, nuts, soya and egg) but I've cut her already limited diet right back. She's subsisting on her prescription formula, baby rice and some pureed fruit or veg. I have offered her whole foods but she hasn't wanted them or just brought them back up.

What else could this be? Is there anything else I can do to improve the siutation?

Tex - Don't really have anything advise but just wanted to say I'm SO relieved that my dd (almost 11mnths) isn't the only one who is only have a small amount of solids in the form of veg and fruit.

welshgirl1 · 11/10/2006 19:59

We seem to have similar problems, my baby is 10mths and she is very sicky. My doctor has presribed Reflux and for the first time tonight I mixed Gaviscon in her feed. Not sure if it will work. Is this the first time you've had this problem as we seem to go in phases. We're ok for a few weeks and then we have another bout of it. They seem to think the Reflux is triggered by food allergies

Rodeo · 11/10/2006 20:03

Tex, sorry little dd's poorly, sounds like a nightmare. How about laying off food for a day or so? Or how about some diorylyte (sp?) Not sure if they can have it at this age, but I used it for my ds who had a long running vomiting virus type thing when he was 18 months and it was the only thing to perk him up. I laid off all his milk drinks too and he had just water for a day or so. It was awful and very worrying, but he eventually shook it off. I also introduced food/milk too quickly while he had it and it came straight back up so had to stop and just take it really slowly.
He was prone to getting to sickness bugs from about 6 months to 2 years, he seemed to get them constantly. But he hardly gets them at all now.
Not proper medical advice (obviously!), hope someone can come along to help more soon.
Give her some get-well kisses from us anyway

pooka · 11/10/2006 20:04

My ds (just 1) has been sick once a day, almost like clockwork, for the last 7 days. Today was the first sick free day. After 5 days of it, he developed a hideous blotchy rash, patch by patch. Saw dr who said viral, suggested piriton, and gradually each spot disappeared in order that they appeared.
He didn't seem under the weather, no temp, same appetite, slept ok. Just one of those things I guess. At same time dd (3) had temp of 104 a week ago, then tummy bug today. DH and I both feel off colour and slightly feverish. Just a whole load of bugs going around at the moment I think.

Hi Cads!

Tex111 · 11/10/2006 20:05

She was eating almost all whole foods before this started last Thursday (sorry CADS! but DS was still on smooth purees at this stage). Fruit, veg, small pieces of meat, corn pasta, rice, porridge, etc, etc. Then Thursday, Friday and Saturday she had almost nothing but her formula and water. I started trying to introduce the baby rice and some apple puree just because I was so concerned at her lack of food. Yesterday she did manage some ham, potatoes and peas but brought the lot up last night.

Welshgirl, DD's first diagnosis when she was a few weeks was reflux. Over time her symptoms became more pronouced and, after getting lots of good advice on MN, I pushed for a referral and we discovered it was allergies. The say she should grow out of them but she's being tested for coeliacs disease. I was just getting to grips with cooking for her on her special diet and then this happens. Really worried about her.

I was wondering how you were getting on. So glad you got the diagnosis - you always knew something was up.

What formula is she on?

Tex111 · 11/10/2006 20:10

Hi Rodeo, I miss you guys! Keep wanting to pop in and say hello. How long did your DS have the vomiting bug? I always thought that with tummy bugs it would last 24-48 hours so I've been freaking out as this keeps going on and on.

Pooka, very interested to hear that it lasted so long with your DS. DD hasn't had a fever either and been in good spirits for the most part. I've been surprised that my DS hasn't caught it yet or that DH and I haven't been ill. Perhaps that's the little bonus waiting until DD gets better.

Hi foxinsocks. Thanks so much for all your help and advice. DD is on Neocate now. That was after soya, Nutramigen and some other one that didn't work out. Once we got to see the consultant at Kings College we got the Neocate prescription. It's made a huge difference. Amazing stuff. It's the only thing she's keeping down at the moment.

I think the most distressing thing right now is the weight loss. She was such a bonny, chubby baby and in the last week she's developed cheekbones. I can even see her hip bones poking out.

TEX, WE MISS YOU TOO! COME BACK!!!!!
Sorry......he had it for at least a week, I took him to the docs about twice but it was just a long running bug, it really took it out of him and he used to cry for milk It was awful, especially as, as a mother, you just want to feed and nourish them. But just keeing him off food and milk was the only thing that worked (and the diorylyte!) I just gave him a cracker or toast if he was hungry, with water. Poor little thing!

foxinsocks · 11/10/2006 20:19

no problem, I'm just glad you got it sorted out. It sounded so similar to dd from the start (with her allergies) that I thought it might have been something similar. Well done you for persevering - I know how awful it can feel at times and how paranoid and over-protective you can be made to feel.

Which baby rice are you feeding her?

It does sound unusual - I would perhaps try 24 hours without solid food and see what happens. I take it she is not unwell in any way (no temp, no overly swollen belly)? She hasn't got a cold or anything like that that could be filling her with mucus and setting off vomiting?

I think if you are concerned (and you have a good feel for her health) I would give it another 48 hours and if she is still vomiting, find out whether you can revisit the paed at Kings.

With dd, even though they eventually picked up her allergies, they also found a hernia but only much later which they now believe could have contributed to all her vomiting so it's always worth getting things checked out. There are LOADS of vomiting bugs doing the rounds at the mo so it is a possibility.

CADS · 11/10/2006 20:21

Hi Rodeo and a big happy birthday to Jess. Can't believe how fast time flies.

Tex - Wish we had moved on. ATM dd lives on soya formula most days and small amount of solids. The only things she can tolerant at the moment are apple, carrot and banana. So far she has only been diagonised as cow's milk intolerant but she didn't even tolerant the Neocate. We run out of it over the Easter weekend and tried her on soya formula and within 2 days she was a completely different baby and even started sleep through the night. Unfortunately, once we tried to weaning her at 6mnths everything went down the tube. She has a few other digestive issues which we are waiting to be seen by a paed gastro consultant for.

Tex111 · 11/10/2006 20:24

Thanks fox. Good advice as always! Will do the 24 hours on no solids and see how we get on. She is generally well in herself which is another reason I find it so confusing. Her baby rice is Cow & Gate. She's had it before with no problems but I know those things can change. She does have a runny nose and at first she was bringing up mucous but for the last 3-4 days it's just been vomit. Last night it was just like mashed up food, didn't even smell like vomit. Will see how we get on tonight.

Rodeo, I will go over to the group and check in. Thanks for the advice. I'll cut out all solids tomorrow and see what happens.

Let us know how she gets on.

Rodeo · 11/10/2006 20:26

Thanks CADS! Miss you too, come back!

Rodeo · 11/10/2006 20:28

Let us know how she goes Tex

Tex111 · 11/10/2006 20:28

Cads, it's so hard and such a long process. DD's weaning has been one step forward and two steps back. We keep discovering other things that she can't tolerate. It's great that you've got some core foods you can fall back on and fantastic that you found a formula that works. Good luck with the consultation. I love our consultant and they have a dietician that we use too. Makes such a difference to have that support network.

We did nothing but fluids yesterday. Well, DH did. I was in bed with the lurgy! I guess it does make me feel a bit better that I've got it too. At least I know it is a virus now. DD did throw up yesterday but only when she bumped her head and got upset. She went the whole night without vomiting. She was miserable though with just her milk, water and a few rice crackers so we're giving her some baby rice and some pureed apple today. Still keeping it simple and we'll see how she does.

Tex111 · 15/10/2006 19:38

Yay! 48 hours with no vomiting (either one of us). DD is back on almost normal food. Had a puree for lunch but managed chicken, rice and veggies for dinner. I can finally start fattening her up again.
