Do they work?

OP posts:
hana · 10/10/2006 14:54

have always been told that best thing is wet combing with lots of conditioner in the hair
I do wash the dds hair with tea tree shampoo though

WigWamBam · 10/10/2006 14:55

I've been using Nitty Gritty repellent spray on dd for a year, and last year she was one of only half a dozen children from her class who didn't get head lice at least once.

I have no idea whether it's because the spray works or just because we've been lucky but I shall keep spraying ...

PrettyCandles · 10/10/2006 15:04

I think so. When ds picked up headlice a couple of years ago, I wetcombed him to clear it out, and the rest of us washed our hair with Teatree oil shampoo and used BizNiz as well, and none of us caught it from him despite lots of close contact. Since then, whenever we get a note from school or nursery that there are cases of headlice in the class I use BizNiz on the children and they haven't caught anything sicne that first infestation.

Of course I've now jinxed us by saying this!

Eliboo · 10/10/2006 15:05

dd is only 2.10 and at pre-school, but already have had a notice about headlice in the group next to hers (all in big hall together). She cries if I wash her hair in teatree, because it stings her eyes, but I put a few drops on her brush in the morning and brush her hair with it before she goes in - she stinks of tea tree, no idea if its off putting to lice but if I were one I'd avoid her like the plague

Nanou1 · 10/10/2006 15:58

my dd had lots and we could not get rid of them... we tried almost everything... the only thing that really work was to do like hana below. every two days whilst in the bath i put any sort conditioner on dd's hair and use the comb. this is what we call "doing our princess hair" ; it is much easier cos as i work day time it was not practical to do treatment in the evening that you need to leave for say 2 hr and then comb... i do her fine combing in the princess bath whilst she plays with her toys and i can take as long as i want doing it!!! she hates being sat on a chair before and tv was not good enough to distract her
good luck; it remember it being hell and frankly this is the only thing that worked for us ... and the cheapest!!! let us know how you get on

2pumpkin2pumpkin1 · 10/10/2006 16:06

We have just had lice for the first time & got rid of them by combing which was easy but PITA when you have twins to treat. Dterring them is my current pan!!!!

I've heard they don't like lavender. I'm sure it was someone on here but can't remember who.

Nanou1 · 10/10/2006 16:11

Nanou1 · 10/10/2006 16:15

TinyGang · 10/10/2006 16:36

I use this

It comes in a slightly different bottle in Wilkinson's and is about £1.89.

I spray the children with it before school, parties etc and in 5 years of school/pre-school and 3 children, we have not had head lice. Yet.

I know it's probably tempting fate to say that, and I expect we will eventually succumb, but I'm sure that the spray ha helped a lot.

I also combe through with conditioner and a nit comb every time we hairwash. Also, I tie up the girls' long hair too.

Nanou1 · 10/10/2006 16:45

hi tiny! the old comb hey?! did you see my failed link below? a survey was done on all the products and methods and they said the most effective was the conditioner and comb. still can't remember the name of that stuff i was referring to... old age is a terrible thing [hmmm] [sadatbeing37today]

MeAndMyBoy · 10/10/2006 16:46

My mil used to put a few drops of tea tree oil in their regular shampoo bottle and none of her 3 kids ever had nits. I've started doing the same with DS and even though we've had notes of nits back from nursery and day care he hasn't had anything yet (fingers crossed).

TinyGang · 10/10/2006 16:49

Aww happy birthday!

Nanou1 · 10/10/2006 16:57

thanks tiny . am ok really...i think pmt does not help iyswim but i still can't remember that name!!!!! head lice are part of the family long distanced cousins we see from time to time it's easier to come last way!

pageturner · 10/10/2006 16:58

We use Boots or Sainsbury's bog standard tea tree and mint shampoo (and conditioner for dd) and we haven't had any headlice since I started a year ago.

mumandlovingit · 10/10/2006 17:02

ive got a tee tree and lavendar deterant spray and a tee tree and lemon spray.neither of mie have had nits even though they've had close contact with a girl repeatedly who's had them for nearly a year!!

dont quite know what her parents are doing to help her get rid of them but its not working!

the sprays seem to work so im going to keep on using them

mumandlovingit · 10/10/2006 17:03

y the way i dont know how much other ones cost but i bought them from our local 'savers' shop and they only cost around £1.80 each

Try hedrin. - www.thorntonross.com/hedrin/index.html Gained a very big UK market share this year because it works.

2pumpkin2pumpkin1 · 10/10/2006 18:09

I know combing is most effective for treating lice.

I am getting the message that Tea Tree does seem to prevent lice.

Am off to buy some tommorrow. Morrisons do shampoo, conditioner & detangling spray. I think I may take the triple deterrent. I do not want them in my house again.

Hi guys! i have finally remembered the name... it's natural stuff and called Quassia. fantastic and saw the critters flying off dd's head when i shampooed her with it. quassia tree is the only tree with no parasite of any sort on it and can be found in south america i think. you can find quassia shampoo in boots.

HallgerdaLongcloak · 12/10/2006 10:05

I was utterly smug about the effectiveness of tea tree oil in shampoo and conditioner up to last Friday when it finally failed me . My eldest's 12, so it probably has worked up to a point though.

TinyGang · 13/10/2006 10:17

Oh bad luck Hallgerda

I think it's inevitable in many ways. I'm dreading our turn.

Still, if your eldest has got to twelve before getting them, that's damn good going, I say. Hope they get zapped soon.

It seems they are becoming a real problem.

MamaMaiasaura · 13/10/2006 10:20

Every hairs wash - use nit comb and conditioner. I also recommend checking hair each day. Altho this is a lot easier with shorter haircuts
