Hi all

Could someone please give me some info on whats the best way to give Losec to a 4 month old? We have been told to put the tablet in 10ml of water and let it dilute but it tastes horrible and DS wont take it.

Has anyone got any tips please...

go to gp or hv and ask if it can be mixed in with some milk instead of water

2pumpkin2pumpkin1 · 10/10/2006 14:50

Hi,

I have just seen the patient information leaflet which says dissolve in 10ml water then slowly dilute into acidic fruit juice. It explicitly says not milk.

The info is about 1/2 way down this leaflet . Under the header "how to take this medicine".

HTH

Hi

Thanks for the quick responce - we have tried dissolving it in fruit juice but the problem is that there are alot of granules left when it has dissoled for the period of time suggested and I really dont like the thoght of givinbg this to Jacob as he's not even on solids yet and not even supposed to be having fruit juice.

what about in a little bit of water
and give it to him by oral syringe
can get them at chemists

sorry about advice on milk

Jacobsdad · 10/10/2006 15:19

We have been trying to give it to him via a syringe but its the taste he hates and he just wont take it. Also the problem is that when its disolved it still have granules in it which clog the syringe! Its such a pain!!! Thanks for the advice - we had tried a small amount of milk mixed with it which GP said was worth a go and shouldnt effect the meds too much. Not sure what to try now!

I think that the reason that you can't dissolvve in the milk is that Losec is Acidic & needs to be to work. Milk will neutralise the acid - so I wouldn't put it any milk.

I am not sure how you are dissolving it but you should dissolve in water first then dilute it into the juice.

I am sure that a very small splash of juice won't hurt and may be enough to just take the taste away. I know the advice has changed to 6 months but 3 yrs ago juice was accptable for a 4 month old so under these circumstances won't hurt. You may find that if he isn't on solids he won't like any other flavours. My DDs (5months) hates calpol - so you may struggle with anything.

When I was googling I did find advice on dissolving the stuff. I will try and find it in case it is of any help.

cut & paste from Lotian NHS guidlines. These guidlines are for babies tube fed but may help you with your dissolving problems.

Omeprazole (Losec MUPS®):
To ensure complete dispersion of tablet and avoid clogging the feeding tube, follow this procedure:
? Remove plunger from a 50ml syringe, place Losec MUP in syringe and replace plunger
? Fill syringe with at least 25ml water* and 5-10ml air
? Shake for at least 2 minutes to disperse tablet (may take longer if a smaller volume is used)
? Hold syringe with tip pointing upwards and check tip is not clogged with tablet
? Attach syringe to tube while tip points upwards
? Shake syringe and position it with tip pointing down. Immediately inject 5 - 10ml into the tube
? Invert syringe after injecting and shake
? Re-position syringe and inject a further 5-10ml. Repeat until syringe is empty
? Fill syringe with 25ml water* and 5ml air and repeat the whole procedure to ensure all granules are removed from the syringe.

Empathy empathy - I remember this so well. I never really found a way to disolve it completely, but used a wide tipped syringe and hoped for the best. When my DS2 was older I disolved it and mixed it in his yoghurt. Hope that helps a little. I do sympathise..

2now4 · 10/10/2006 16:12

my 9 week old also has to take this and we had the same problem - however there is a liquid version that my gp was able to prescribe but the hospital who originally prescribed didnt stock. When you go to the phamacy to collect its a special order so may take a day or two but solved the problem for us.

2now4 · 10/10/2006 16:15

should have said its called omperazole which is diagnosed for us to treat reflux.
hope thats useful

Hi 2now4

Thanks for the advice - was that from the UK?

omeprozole is another brand name for the same drug. My DS2 tried them both. One worked better than the other. So there may be a reason why your doc has prescibed one and not the other. Best to check

2pumpkin2pumpkin1 · 10/10/2006 16:41

Omeprazole is the 'generic name' that docs & pharmacists use. Losec is the market name which describes the drug made by a given manufacturer. They are exactly the same thing. Its like Paracetamol (Generic Name) = Calpol (Marketed name).

2pumpkin2pumpkin1 · 10/10/2006 16:44

Oh and you could try posting this in teh breast & bottle feeding section with a title like "Losec/omeprazole for treatment of reflux". You may get more opinons from people that have been there with babies.

naswm · 10/10/2006 16:46

2pumkin - I had that argument with so many pharmacists! But my reflux specialists said that some babies react different to them. Its all in the make up apparently.

2now4 · 10/10/2006 20:26

In the UK - I was told by GP its exactly the same thing but do check with your Paed to put mind at rest but the idea of dissolving the tablet drove us to distraction, sediment blocked the syringe and irritated back of her throat. convinced she wasnt really getting any where near the dose she was supposed to be having on tablet form.

Jacobsdad · 11/10/2006 10:31

Hi 2now4

Thanks for the advice - can you remember what the specific name of the omeprazole liquid was? We have been told that the phamacist can make the tablets into a liquid but it tastes awful so even less chance of Jacob taking it. Did it come as a powder or actual liquid.

Thanks for your help.

OP posts:
2pumpkin2pumpkin1 · 11/10/2006 18:34

I really don't think you can get Omeprazole as a proper liquid/medicine/suspension. I think the closest you can get is a powder which the pharmacist dissolves in water - pretty much the same as you are doing with the tablets. A liquid form certainly wasn't available a couple of years ago.

I may be wrong though - I am happy to be proven wrong.

I really think that you need to tackle the methods to give what you have got. I don't think there is a 'medicine'.

It is worth stciking with it though as Omeprazole really is the best thing for reflux - for adults & children.

suddenly thought perhpas not good idea for them to be deluged with calls - im sure your local pharmacy would be able to help im surprised how many people seem to want to find out about this. If you do find out you could post here and let others know the outcome.

Just to let everyone know that I have been intouch with my local Boots and the phamacist there has found that Omeprezole IS available in a liquid suspension form! Why no one else seems to know about this (including the hospital and paed there) I have no idea!!? It is also available under another brand name as a powder but the liquid form sounds good as the 5mg that we have been prescribed amounts to about 2.5ml which is a small amount o give so should make life for all of us alot easier!

We have ordered some some fingers crossed it will solve the problem.

Thanks to everyone for help and advice.
