Are there any products to reduce my son's facial scar?

During the summer my son slipped and fell on the corner of a wooden chair which resulted in him having his face glued (top of cheek). He now has a scar which is still red and noticeable (approx 1cm) and I'm just wondering if there are any products out there that will help reduce it?!! He's 3 by the way. I had to wait ages in A and E and am also wondering if the wait will have added to the scarring?

you could try boi oil, but tbh it probably will fade of its own accord. I don't think the wait will have affected it at all. Scars can take a long time to fade

i've heard good things about bio oil too, and i wouldn't think a wait in A&E would make a difference.

yes, vitamin E also very good, especially on a young scar.

SoupDragon · 09/10/2006 22:08

Vit E oil as Rickman says.

DS2 had his forehead glued in, er, May I think. He=is scar has faded since then but it's still visible. I doubt it will fade conpletely buy I expect it to fade to a white line over time. I kept forgetting to put the Vit E on it so his has healed by itself. His is about an inch long!

my dd has bad scarring from chickenpox on her face. We've been using bio oil for a few months and it's definately helping. You can see a difference between her face and scars on her body which we haven't treated.

The old Sunday Times alternative health person always recommended Rosa Mosqueta Oil for scarring. Think it was available from somewhere like Rio Trading (not sure of name).

Chocol8 · 09/10/2006 22:42

I managed to pick up the Rosa Mosqueta oil in a small health food shop but it was expensive at £10 for a tiny bottle. Apparently very good though.

Either that or Vitamin E works wonders - my best friend was very badly scarred from catching my ds's chickenpox. You could hardly tell she'd had it after using it for 6 weeks - brilliant stuff.

dd had to have a wound glued just to the side of her eyebrow where she also fell (Sept 2004). We haven't treated the scar at all and you can hardly see it now. She also has chickenpox scars and we haven't treated those either, these too are fading.

Scar treatments are a bit of an unproven area really, a bit like wrinkle creams! There is no scientific evidence to say that these creams reduce scarring, but psychologically it is good because you feel that you are doing something and you are at least moisturising the skin.

I had a bad scar from a car crash when I was 18 and needed plastic surgery but surgeon told me to put total sunblock on it for first year otherwise it can become raised and sore then buy Vit E cream and wheatgerm oil which I mixed and massage it on every night and it went almost completely after about six months , its not noticeable now unless you look really up close and it was really bad from my eye lid right across , so it really worked if you spend a few minutes each night before bedtime, plus his skin is young so it will probably work better my dd had one on her leg and I did this and its gone too.

Mojomummy · 09/10/2006 23:19

Holland & Barratt do a good vit E oil (about £5) & there is another good one by J/A/S/O/N (about £6-£7)

FWIW my DH has a scar on his forehead from when he hit the fireplacee. 30 odd years later it's still red, although not raised.

lou33 · 09/10/2006 23:21

the bloke i am seeing had spinal surgery in jan and used bio oil on the scar, you can barely see it now

darlink · 09/10/2006 23:35

the scarring will fade a great deal if he is only 3 and it just happened in the summer.
one of my boys had a facial injury at that age. The scar was very obvious for six months, then faded away almost completley within about 18m.
