A couple of months ago i felt a bit of a sore area on the outer part of my left breast. It seemed to go away but has come back a few days ago. I've just been to see gp who examined me but said she couldn't feel anything but has referred me urgently due to family history (mum diagnosed with breast cancer same age that i am now) and the fact that i am beside myself with worry. She couldn't explain what the pain could be though so i am still nearly as worried as i was before i went. I really don't want to spend the time until my referral this worried, has anyone experienced symptoms like this??

I had a similar experience at the end of last year. I also had a hard patch on one breast. Also have family history (mum and aunt). It was fine. An "unusually firm patch of normal breast tissue" apparently (very unusual in my case!!). And breast pain can come and go, related to hormones. It's very common apparently. Fingers are crossed for you.

I had a similar thing a while ago (pre-baby) - it was a very obvious, hard lump and was painful (which is apparently a good sign & that they worry more if it doesn't hurt). I too have a family history of breast cancer so was obviously very concerned. The doctor said it was a 'breast mouse' & referred me to the hospital for a biopsy. For one reason & another I ended up with a private appointment where they just did an ultrasound and found it to be milk tissue which had moved through the top layer of breast tissue (don't remember the technical terms). Apparently it happens sometimes - it sorted itself with no problems. Let us know how you get on.

thanks for your replies. I'm finding it really hard to not worry and keep imagining worse case senarios. I'm sort of on auto pilot and keep imagining my two girs (age 1 and 3) growing up without me as I did without my mum. I haven't been eating or sleeping and am starting to feel ill because of that!

The only plus side is if I have a really hot bath the pain seems to go away. I'm taking that as a good sign!

Oh sweatpea, I know just how you feel... I have gone through this 3 times now. The first time I had the exact same symptoms as you - pain and a hardened patch. It turned out to be hormonal pain and fatty tissue. I have heard that pain is not a common feature of breast cancer, so the fact you have pain is a good thing...

Please try not to worry (easier said than done)
Any idea how long till your appointment?

Hope your appt comes through quickly. If it was an urgent referral, it should be within 14 days.

Had the same experience as others have mentioned. Was referred twice this year (also have family history, mum & aunt). First one was cysts and second time normal breast tissue. Now have annual appts because of family history.

Hope you hear soon, take carexx

thanks so much for replying. It helps to hear other people have had similar symptoms and were fine. My appointment is on Tuesday morning so not too much longer to wait. (even though I would do anything not to go )

So pleased your appt. has come through. Will be thinking of you.

gigglinggoblin · 11/10/2006 11:28

my mum has had lots of painful lumps, her mum also had breast cancer. they have all (thank god) turned out to be cysts and blocked milk ducts. blocked ducts doesnt have to be just after breast feeding, hers have been around 20 years after she finished so this could be a possibility. fingers crossed for tuesday
