cranial osteopathy

just wondered what people's thoughts were on this... our dd is 'not quite herself' and we wondered about seeing a cranial osteopath as so many of you report good results. if you have used one, what were you seeking treatment for and do you think it helped? also, what exactly happens? thanks.

I've used them a lot in the past. Ds2 went when 6 months old and was screaming for 6-7 hours a night. GP could do nothing, but c.o. sorted it almost immediately. He had tight scalp syndrome (where the plates in the skull spring back too far after the birth and the skull becomes too big for the scalp). He has also been for treatment to stop spontaneous nosebleeds - no reason for bleeding. Whilst undergoing this treatment, they noticed a problem with his right leg and were able to put a stop to the pains in this leg which had been waking him at night.

DS1 has been to adjust his jaw - he had an overbite (where the top teeth sit behind the bottom teeth) and I wanted to avoid braces. They managed to sort out the positioning of his jaw so that, as his face grows, his jaw will automatically find the right position.

saw one when ds didn't poo for 10 days (and was mega unhappy with it). it was actually my homeopath that recommended it as she felt that ds's head was wrong shape (i hadn't noticed). anyway, went along slightly sceptical: wow, he did a poo that afternoon and has never looked back...his digestion had always caused him problems but 2 sessions with the cranial osteopath saw him right...i would highly recommend it for digestion, hearing, skin or just the kind of out of sortsness that you're describing. i know a great one in sw london if that's where you are hth

we took ds when he was 3 weeks as he had the most horredous colic and cried probably for 5-6 hours a day. It wasn't a miracule cure but it definitely helped. they just lie them on a bed and hold their head! well that's what it looks like. The movements are so slight that you can't tell what they are doing. Doesn't hurt, and isn't in anyway distressing.

Taking ds2 today. Stupidly I forgot I will have ds1 with me- it's going to be chaos.

They've been very good for ds2. After first visit I was asked if he coughed up a lot of mucus- I said no never. She said well he has a lot of gunk in his chest. She fiddled a bit- then at midnight that night he sat up and coughed up the thickest greenest mucus I have seen! Don't know what she did - but it worked.

Tried it with ds1 but I think his problems are unfixable!

There is more info on this on the thread about grommits and glue ear. My ds and dd have both had this for colic and glue ear and the results were fantastic. I would highly recommend it as non invasive and worth a try. It is always good to make sure they have experience with kids first though.

kiwisbird · 16/04/2004 11:00

excellent esp for those little niggles you cannot put your finger on, have used it with both my children with astonishing results

tallulah · 16/04/2004 14:33

My 16 yo has been seeing a cranial osteopath every 6 weeks since he was 7. To begin with DS had an odd gait & kept himself hunched over & he straightened that out. It just seems to keep him well & sorts out little problems before they turn into big ones.

NQWWW · 16/04/2004 22:30

I saw one with my dd as she was horribly whingy in her early weeks. Each time I went I thought I noticed a definite improvement for the next 24 hours, and she was inifinitely better by the age of 12 weeks or so.......mind you that is the age that colic is supposed to clear p anyway, so who knows? Still at least I felt like I was doing something, and the osteopath was lovely and sympathetic (so she should be at £26 for half an hour once or twice a week)

hovely · 18/04/2004 15:57

What's the differnece btw cranial osteopathy & cranio-sacral therapy?
Anybody tried both?
Would you recommend either for repeated chest infections & runny nose (dd2.4) and/or rustly phlegmy chest at night (ds 3mths)?

Has anyone ever used this to help depression/PND? Mine has flared up again recently (am undergoing psychological therapy at the mo) and wonder if it could help?

juniper68 · 21/04/2004 11:38

have a look at this

juniper68 · 21/04/2004 11:40

I took my ds2 on monday and he fell asleep during it and seems much better for going. He goes again on monday. he was extremely relaxed during it so I'm sure it'll help depression. I'm going to go myself once he's finished his treatments.

juniper68 · 21/04/2004 11:42

have a look at this

last link didn't work, hope this does

ghengis · 21/04/2004 11:48

Thanks Juniper68. How much does it cost per session?

juniper68 · 21/04/2004 12:01

YW ghengis, it cost us £30 for his first session but it's a bit more for adults. I'm in the NE England so don't know how much it'll be where u are?

ghengis · 29/04/2004 15:01

Well! I went to see a cranial osteopath yesterday and it was amazing! After taking various medical details and getting me to look right and left and bend over, I lay down and she began.

She held and then manipulated the area where my head and neck meet. I had my eyes shut but I 'saw' the most amazing, swirling colours! She then held and gently shook my pelvic bones and put her hand on my pubic bone (!). After about half an hour she asked me to cross my arms in front so that my elbows were touching and with the full force of her body cracked something into place. Alarming sound but it didn't hurt.

Afterwards I felt so much more balanced and clear headed. I am going back for 2 more sessions and can't wait. It's such a relaxing experience and not at all what I was expecting.

Jeeling · 29/04/2004 15:27

Just to add my good experience. Ds screamed for 16 hours a day (!yes really) for the first 8 weeks of his life. I delayed taking him to the C/O because I didn't really know what it was all about. Wish I'd done it earlier. It took 3 weeks to calm him down. The first week she told me he would be worse and yes he was. The second week saw a big improvement and the third week cleared up the problem. Apparently it was just colic and some babies get it worse than others - just unfortunate he got it bad. May be a coincidence but he has never had any digestive problems since (touch wood!). He seemed to almost enjoy the experience and fell asleep in her hands. Although cheaper for children still £25 per 1/2 hour session. If you're desperate it might be worth a try.

juniper68 · 29/04/2004 22:33

That's fantastic news ghengis My DS2 went for his second session yesterday. He was really relaxed but didn't fall asleep this time. I've seen a tremendous change in him. He's calmer and his speech has improved.

jeeling, I wish I'd known about it 6 years ago when DS1 was a baby, he screamed constantly for months I know for a fact it would have helped him as I blame his long awful labour. Pleased your Ds got relief though (and you too )
