hungover on GRAPE juice !?

Dh has just been conducting an experiment - normally he has red grape juice with dinner (not liking red wine he thought maybe he could get the same benefit from the juice), and a glass of cider in the evening.

He has been waking up with a headache in the mornings - he tried cutting out the cider - still had the headache. So he cut out the grape juice - NO HEADACHE .

So was he getting "hungover" by red grape juice ?!

Anyone else had a similar experience ?

Sounds like he is not great with salicylates. I get really tired and hungover feeling about an hour after eating tinned tuna or tomatoes. (from amines)

ooh - isn't the body wierd - allergic to tinned tomatoes and grape juice

If your dh is allergic to sulfites...this could be the reason. The sulfites are used in the growing process of grapes and the fermenting process of wine. I am allergic to sulfites and can't drink/eat anything grape based. I used to get wheezy and fell like a i had a hangover. But as i got older the reaction got worse and now I get an anaphylactic reaction to even a small amount of sulfites.

that is interesting. He doesn't get wheezy - but he is an allergic person - so I guess something else to keep an eye on.

Industrial food production is full on unsuspected hazards isn't it ?

Well, actually sulfites are much more frequently used in organic farming. So I personally try to avoid organic fruits and vegetables. (My father is one of the world's experts on causes of cancer and fully supports this...)
I did not have troubles with grapes as a child...though I don't think grape juice was really around in our household. My mother was strictly a milk or water to drink enforcer. (I subscribe to the same with my children...fruit juice is something they get on special occasions like parties or when we're out to dinner).

interesting - we tend to grow our own veg - or buy normal (non-organic) - we eat a lot of veg.

Grape juice is a relatively recent feature in this house (since we discovered lidl !). Usually we have milk or water - but Dh and the one or two of the kids also have fruit juice with dinner. Dh was only having maybe half a mugful - but it was obviosly having an affect on him.
