Period after birth - when ?

Was just wondering, I had an emergency c section 5 weeks ago when I had ds. I had an infection a couple of weeks after and had antibiotics. My bleeding stopped about a week ago (brown / pink bloody mucus - sorry for graphic description !) then I started bleeding again today with fresh blood. I am breast feeding but not exclusively. He had some formula too. Any idea when the first period is after post labour bleeding stops ? Not sure if I should be worried. Can't rememeber with dd when first period was.

I was in a very similiar situation - emergency section, partly breastfeeding - and had the exact same thing happen. I spoke to my HV and we both made the assumption that it was my period. It lasted about a week and 28 days later I had another period and they've been like clockwork ever since.

Maybe the same thing is happening to you. I'd speak to your HV about it just to be sure.

That's your period back
I was the same as you and Tex111, periods backat 6 weeks for DS1 and 6 months for DS2. And I am/was exclusively BF.

yes, think everyone will be different - AF returned for me when dd was 8 months old, vag birth and I breastfed too. Hated it when it came back, was so nice when it wasn't around!

Tillysmummy, it could be a period, or it could be that you have been overdoing it - I was convinced I had got a period 7 weeks after dd's birth - just as you say, stopped bleeding a week before, then fresh red blood. I was really convinced. (And a bit surprised since I was aggressively exclusively b/feeding). But then it started and stopped a bit, and I noticed that it seemed to correlate with when I was carrying dd in the sling for more vigorous walks. Anyway, after a couple more weeks it did stop, and then didn't have one till dd was 7 months. Apparently, lots of people bleed for longer than the prescribed 6 weeks. And if you've been more active it could be that. Of course it could be a period too.

Thanks ladies I might check with hv anyway as don't have our 6 week check at docs till 7 weeks. It's weird because I know this sounds gross but also on Sunday had pains and then a weird little ball (about size of a large grape) of sort of pinky whitey fluffy tissue. I guess it's all still remains of what's inside. I had a vaginal birth with dd and I guess lost a lot more of everything at the time but I guess with a c section it takes longer for it all to come out.

I've been wondering about this topic but kind of from the other end of the process. Ds is 9 months old and I stopped b/feeding him almost two months ago on going back to work. He does have the odd feed every couple of days (still seems to be something there for him). But still no AF (is that the right term?). Is this normal?
Apologies for hijack!0

Tillysmum, I'd definitely speak to the HV. Not sure what that weird little ball could be. One of the nice things about a section is that they actually hoover out all the muck so you should've bled less and had fewer clots, if any, than a vaginal delivery.

eddm, a friend of mine had something similiar. Her periods took a while to return and she wanted to start trying for another baby. I remember a distraught phone call when she was convinced that she would never have any more children. She finally completely gave up breastfeeding and had a period two months later. She's just had the one period since then because she got pregnant that month and is still breastfeeding her second baby!
