Is there red skin underneath the scales? Do the scales come off (like a scab) and then regrow? Does it itch? If so it could be psoriasis, my DH has it. Do a search for psoriasis on Google.com and you can find pictures of the most common types. HTH

the boots www.wellbeing.com (can't do links yet) has bit on skin conditions with pictures.
could it be ringworm ?

robinw - my dh had a lump underneath his skin on his back about 2 years ago. It wasn't discoloured, but everytime I cuddled him I could feel it until eventually it was the size of a small egg. I nagged and nagged for him to go to the doctor. When he finally did (about 1 year on!) they told him it was 99% benign but they couldn't be sure without cutting it out. I was pregnant at the time and came on all heavy 'I can't bring a baby into the world if your going to die of cancer.....' kind of thing. He finally got a day appointment to have it out, and then forgot about it! By the time he remade the appointment I was 1 week overdue and the resultant scar and aching didn't help in our ds delivery at all! Needless to say, it was absolutly fine - just a fatty deposit in the muscle. I suppose what I'm saying is that your dh has a duty to you and your family to sort it out asap with the doctor - if only to put your mind at rest. Men are crap at this kind of thing, but remind him of how you feel about it - it might work

robinw, I wouldn't seek advice from us on this one, this is one for his GP. R

robinw, my partner has had cancer and his advice to anyone with lumps and bumps that even slightly concern them is get it checked out with your GP.
Best wishes Winnie x

Robinw, as Winnie and Rhiannon have said, don't hesitate to contact your GP. The dh of a friend at work had a lump on his foot which he ignored for quite a while; had it removed recently, and it was a blood clot (I don't want to worry you unduly tho'. I hope all is well with your dh. Jodee xx

That should have been a close bracket, not a smiley wink ...

robinr - don't want to sound unsympathetic, but have you really seen the gp enough recently? Isn't that what they're there for? You have a genuine concern and one of their jobs is to monitor or allay that fear, if possible. Also - they only give you 7 mins per appointment, so don't feel too guilty

manna · 06/04/2002 21:48

sorry - should be robinw

My gp gets very cross with me for looking things up on the net - I always end up thinking I've got some life-threatening disease which is actually something very mediocre and easily treated

It reminds me of that Sex in the City line about typing in your symptoms on Google and waiting for the search engine to return 'CANCER'.

Robinw, I'm sure you are right in your diagnosis and hopefully it is benign but please go to your gp anyway!!

tufty · 07/04/2002 20:38

Robinw poor you, you've been thr a lot lately.. Can say no more than everyone else which you know anyway... hope to hear reassurance soon.
Take care, tufty
