Awful nappy rash - tried every cream on the shelf, any ideas?

Ds has very bad nappy rash atm. Think it's a combination of his mmr jab and his teeth.

Have tried all the nappy rash creams, and leaving him to run round without his nappy on when I can, but it's still so raw.

Any ideas? Poor little man is in quite a bit of pain

My Ds had same at same age. If it is a small area i used compeed liquid bandage. It is applied with a wand and is waterproof and stays in place for a few days giving the area chance to heal. This is not recommended on the box but I was desperate and it did sort out the problem.

PanicPants · 04/10/2006 21:04

Thankyou all, Sudocreme and metanium is what we are using most of all, and it normally does the trick but not for the past week.

Will definitly try the camomile tea.

Do you mean canastan as in thrush treatment?

waitrose do one called baby bottom or bottom butter - tis great! (also from ocado)

Joceybean · 04/10/2006 21:10

Drapoline (sp?) is another possibility. You can usually get this in boots. Good luck and hope something works x

dinny · 04/10/2006 21:10

sounds like it could be fungal if usual measures won't shift it, PanicPants - go to GP for script? otherwise, warm water and cotton wool only, nappy off, bit of metanium. but I bet you do that anyway! hope he's better soon.

Frizombie · 04/10/2006 21:22

Had this with dd1 a few years ago, got to dr's who perscribed the same thing you get for athletes foot, daktarin!! cleared it in a few days....

PanicPants · 04/10/2006 21:24

Hmmmmm might be worth taking him to the doctors if it doesn't clear soon then.

Thanks again.

Not sure if this is one that you have used but we used Morhulin on DS, which worked really well.

We had to use some baby wipes once (sensitive ones - normally we just use water/cotton wool) and they left his little bum red raw, a friend at work recommended Morhulin and it cleared it up within 24 hours.

We had to ask the chemist for it as it wasn't just on the shelf - it stinks a bit also as it has cod liver oil in as well as Zinc.

Hope things improve for you soon.

sweetkitty · 04/10/2006 21:32

If normal creams don't shift it, chances are it's a fungal infection (both DDs have has this at some stage) canestan usually does the trick.

mawbroon · 04/10/2006 21:48

My ds had weeping nappy rash last week, I think because of the different wipes I started using. I googled and up came an ancient mumsnet thread where someone suggested cornflour. I suppose it has the same effect as talc keeping the area really dry, but without any perfumes etc. Anyway, we tried it and his bum was visibly better after using it for two nappies worth and it was gone in about two and a half days. Also, we switched back to cotton wool and water and gave him time with his nappy off. I hope it clears up soon because it can make them so miserable.

vitomum · 04/10/2006 21:49

IME changing to plain water and allowing to air dry was best solution. and as much nappy off time as possible. Took about a week to clear up ds's bad bout of nappy rash.

BabyBellaMummy · 04/10/2006 21:56

hi
Egg White is the answer my mum used to be a nurse and this is an old tip for bed sores but works fab on DD bleeding nappy rash Just seperate egg and spread white onto whole area allow to dry and stick nappy back on
Works a treat and doesnt sting or leave a mess in nappy on skin just sinks in and gets it healed
HTH

kittywits · 04/10/2006 22:56

Check it isn't thrush. Thrush can spread onto the top of the thighs as well as being on the bottom area and needs a cream like canestan to clear it up. It can look very like nappy rash.

CreepyJess · 04/10/2006 22:57

I always say this.. but when mine had Nappy Rash From Hell (that was bleeding!) I used plain old Savlon cream and it worked like a dream.

Olihan · 04/10/2006 23:02

I remember someone on here recommending putting bicarb of soda in the bath water. Have never tried it personally but may be worth a go!!

sahmtotwo · 04/10/2006 23:37

The best thing I find when my two have had nappy rash is a couple of handful of oats in some tights and put in the bath. Run a bath and remove oats. Let LO play for as long as s/he wants. Then when out of the bath and putting the nappy back on put egg white on the bottom and when dry pop nappy on. It's like magic!!

chipmonkey · 05/10/2006 00:11

PanicPants agree with others who say it's probably thrush. ds1 and ds2 used to get this a lot. With ds1 our GP prescribed Timodene to be used sparingly with Zinc talc and starch powder. With ds2 I used over-the-counter Canesten and the same powder. (In Ireland we have to pay to see the GP so on your 2nd baby you learn to talk to the pharmacist instead of the doc!) Have to say, I switched to cloth nappies on ds3 after using disposables on the first 2 and the only time he gets a rash is if he's put into a disposable. ( Usually by MIL. Grrrr)

HauntedsandCastle · 05/10/2006 02:09

Boil up some Pearl Barley & let the liquid col. Iffer him this. It will help neautralise the urine so it doesn't worsen the rash. DD loved it!
