?

As long as it isn't smelling like nail varnish remover )ketones)

AllieBongo · 04/10/2006 20:17

gangrenous appendix was the cause of my pal's ds rotten breath. Sorry to be the voise of doom

delllie · 04/10/2006 20:17

Could it be Acid reflux??

My DD suffers from this and her breath smells acidic when its not well controlled or is ill.

QuiQuoQua · 04/10/2006 20:31

well yes it is like that. it only happens mostly when she comes back from the childminder.
My mum says it happens when they're ill (but she is not) or a digestive problem due which in this case could be due to what she eats there. i.e. food that it's too rich or fat.

does that make sense? she calls it ketones (in italian)

If you have diabetes your breath smells for ketones.....like nail varnish remover

LisaHy · 04/10/2006 20:40

Hi QQQ. I would get her checked out at your drs surgery asap - a simple urine test would rule out diabetes which can produce the "ketone" smell. The smell would be worse if she is having lots of sugary foods. A nurse can check quite simply. Any other symptoms? It will probably turn out to be something completely different.

LisaHy · 04/10/2006 20:41

Incidentally - the smell is also described as being like pear drops.

Blandmum · 04/10/2006 20:42

Does your dc have other symptoms like excessive thirst, or going to the loo frequently?

If so it may be wise to get the doc to tak a look, as these are symptoms of diabetes....may be nothing, but better to be safe etc

QuiQuoQua · 04/10/2006 20:58

she is only 14m so I don't know how often she wees as she's in nappies.
as for thirst, she does drink a lot, but then again I don't know how the average is IYNWIM.
she never has it (I think)when she's at home with me but DH and I have been noticing the 3 days she goes there she comes back with this smelly breath and she seems to have a riflux.
could it be that she's not digesting properly, maybe not appropriate food given?

she's having MMR done on friday so I'll ask the nurse before.

dellie what do you mean by 'not well controlled'?

she's never had it this problem though.

qqq it's perhaps what in Italy we call acetone (ketosis), which usually occurs after having had a temperature (as it brings sugar levels down) or a diet too rich in fat. however, have her checked by your gp before the mmr, to rule out that she's not coming down with something and also the diabetes. all the best!

My ds's breath smells like pear drops whenever he's even a little bit unwell. I had him checked for diabetes after reading a thread on another forum, but he was all clear. The practice nurse said it happens in some children if they have a temperature, but it could also be a sign of the beginnings of dehydration, so I always get him to drink lots of water when I smell it. He's now 5 and it has happened for as long as I can remember.

welliemum · 05/10/2006 00:44

Always happens to dd1 (age 2) when she has a cold. It goes away as soon as her appetite comes back to normal.

QuiQuoQua · 06/10/2006 11:11

Quootiep how's your little one? mine's not smelly anymore.
i've given her some light food and lots of water.
