Nine month old with constipation

Hi everyone. What can you give a nine, almost ten month old who seems constipated? He is very active and almost walking, but when he needs to go, he makes the most excruciating straining noises for AGES before anything appears. I'm not sure whether he is bunged up or he can't push properly?? I've been giving him lactulose, but i don't want to carry that on too long. He eats a very good diet and drinks loads of water. I'm lost...

Have you tried prune juice?

Henda · 04/10/2006 18:58

No? I love it, gives me bad gut rot though

Infacol ususally causes an eruption in our house.

Oh right? The colic stuff? I'll give anything a go!!!

I bought dd some prunes to eat she loves them and it worked wonders.

are his poos hard ? probably the best indicator of whether he is constipated. If so, cut apples are good. Very bad are bananas.

Lactulose isn't very good because it makes the poo go sludgy.

Also does he cry when he strains ?

Henda · 04/10/2006 20:02

No, his poos aren't overly hard, and he doesn't cry. He wears himself out straining, i'm scared he's gonna rupture something! There's no way he'll eat apple yet, only just got him on the seven month food. But he eats fruit puree every day. Weird

Henda my dd is same age as your son and goes through stages of being constipated regardless of her diet. Sometimes she is horrendously so to the point of screaming in pain and me err physically having to help her go. Hence I buy the prunes which she will eat about 1/4 of one and then will be able to go.

Only a quarter? Fantastic. I'll get some tomorrow. Thanks so much. I didn't wanna look like an idiot going to the doctors

dried soaked apricots are good too. My daughter thinks they are sweetie - buy the crazy jacks ones though, or similar which don't have sulpher dioxide.

Can also puree them &/or prunes with apple. Fresh mango & pineapple is also excellent.

Dunno bout him, i'll eat all of that, sounds delicious!
