Hiya -
Seeing the thread about the article in the Guardian reminded me to ask ; is it bad for my DS to be round MILs, but she smokes outside (back door open though)? We've been there alot for the past 2 months, and everyone goes outside to smoke while im there, but come back in, pick him, breathe on him etc., is this still quite bad? I dont want to tell her not to smoke in her own home, but I dont want politness to affect DSs health...

If you have any links to "backup" if it is bad, that would be great!

Thanks x

that's what happens in this ouse - DH smokes, and any visitors go outside into the garden for a fag (kitchen door shut then come back in - i've just started allowing him to come into the porch bit outside when it rains as long as the fire door is sjut so the smell can't come in the house. I don't let any of them push his pram either, or smoke int he car - being fussy I know but I don't really want him around the smoke - but as u say they tend to go out/come back in and hold DS. I guess it's not as bad as her holding your DS whilst having a fag?

she does keep away but then she STINKS and breathes all over him... and sees it as OK because she isnt smoking next to him - and im not sure if it is ok...

I am bumping this because I know someone will be along who knows, but I am sure I have read stuff, possibly on the SIDS website about the smoke clinging to people's clothes, even after the fag it can still have adverse effects. I will look for a link.

zippitippitoes · 04/10/2006 08:57

apparently the after effects of smoking a cigarette continue even if it has been smoked outside..will see if i can find a link

I can't find anything more specific than smoke clinging afterwards and this still being a risk for asthma/sids

I thought it was a couple of hours but by then most people will have had another one anyway!

My health visitor said if you smoke outside have an old smoking coat to put on so that stinks not your clothes when you come back in.

izzybiz · 04/10/2006 09:56

There was news somewhere the other week about this, but cant remember where i saw it.

Apparantly they now think that ciggarette smoke clings to clothes etc even when smoking outside.

A test was done on children of parents who smoke outside, and nicotine was found in their hair and urine.

I am just out of hospital with new DD who was in special care with fluid on lungs.
On discharge we were lectured quite thoroughly on risk of SIDS (higher for us) and told on no account to allow DD to be held by anyone whose clothes smelt of smoke. We were told that if anyone we knew who smoked wanted to hold the baby then they should put on a different top/coat when they go outside to smoke and take it off before cuddling baby. They didn't give a time limit for doing this in terms of age of DD I'm afraid (well we didn't ask because we don't know any smokers).

EVERYONE on DHs side smokes, and no one on my side smokes... its going to end up meaning less time with his side I think. Even once a week... for 16+ years... darn smokers!
