Laparoscopy - anyone had one? Feeling a bit nervous!

So I had a week in June when I felt like a had a urinary infection without the burning sensation (so needing to go all the time but not much happening) and some cramping. I saw the GP who said to have an ultrasound as I had an ovarian cyst in the past. All the symptoms went away after that but I thought I would go and have the scan done. A large cyst was found so they referred me to the gynae.

Saw him earlier this month and he had another ultrasound done which showed a 8-9cm complex cyst but there was some rectovaginal septum involvement so he suspected endometriosis (however CA125 was only 19 so he thought endo might be unlikely). Since I had told him I had pelvic inflammatory disease 5 years ago he said there was a chance of adhesions from that and hopefully the cyst is just a simple or haemmoragic one. Either way he decided a diagnostic laparoscopy with a possible cystectomy at the same time dependant on what he finds.

Got a call today saying they have an op date of 27th November which I took as I want it done quickly.

But I am shitting myself a bit. I have never had an operation under general (the last cyst was drained through my abdomen as I was pregnant and they didn't want to operate). I have always been a bit scared of it as I worry that I won't wake up or something bad will happen during the op. My gran died after an op as she couldn't handle the anaesthetic (she was 74, smoked 80 a day and weighed more than 20 stone to be fair).

I smoke 1 a day (have stopped now) and have a BMI of 35 (top end of what they like to operate on apparently).

So what is it like and how long did it take you to get over? I am nervous about the results but right now I am worried about the op itself.

I had one to try to clear my Fallopian tube of adhesions and for investigation purposes.

I recovered within about 4-5 days but give yourself plenty of time to rest afterwards. I am not overweight though so don't know if that makes a difference.

I had one and was given a note for 2 weeks off work. Definitely needed the first week off, second was only needed as I had a long commute by public transport.
