Unhappy with strength of new lenses

Hello, I went to the optician the other week for my 2 year eye test. Turns out I have gone down from -7.5 to-9.5 dioptres in that time. It was a complete shock, as I have been wearing my lenses with no vision problems whatsoever. I have since been given my new glasses (with the new -9.5 prescription) and they have done nothing but make everything look worse. Lights in the nighttime look blurry, and I can't even walk down stairs without holding onto the railing because they look so distorted in depth.

I gone back to wearing my original contact lenses with the weaker prescription, and everything is fine. I just can't understand why I have been given such a high powered prescription, I mean a jump in -2 dioptres in 2 years can't be normal, can it?

I really wanted to ask your opinions on whether I should get another test somewhere else, as my future career path could depend on my eyesight. :(

I'd persist, you'll get used to them. I had the same problem with mine, had eye strain for a few weeks and wore them sparingly, swapping them for my glasses. Eventually they started to feel comfy and now they are belting, the new prescription has really made a difference.

Even with blurriness of lights?

i would ask for a re test

On average I dropped -1 a year for 10 years. My shortsightedness slowed down when I hit 30. I'm over 40 now and it's heading the other way!
I would stick with it for a while, unless it's affecting such things as driving. Go back to your optician.

Well only you know your own eyes, so go to someone else if you are really unhappy. Changing so dramatically can and does happen, unfortunately. I'm fairly convinced this has happened, and your eyes are playing catch up to the new lenses at the minute.

That's interesting, Bloodyhell11, so you went from short to long sighted?

Your contact lense prescription will be different from glasses. I'm -4.5 for specs but -2.75 for lenses in both eyes.

Has the optician used standard thickness lenses? The thickness of these could make things seems wobbly. Also, ask them if they measured your back vertex distance and compensated the prescription if necessary. This could make a world of difference on a prescription like yours if the glasses sit nearer or further away from your eyes than the trial frame.
