Ovarian Cysts - please help!

I have been having problems with cysts since my late teens (now 28). My left ovary was removed after a cyst burst and ruptured it. My remaining ovary has been operated on 4 times, since DS was born (4 years ago), to have cysts drained. The problem is that I have constant pain in the area, and a multitude of other symptoms that my gp thought could relate it to PCOS (weight gain, massive mood swings, acne, migranes, depression, insulin intolerance and extra hair - on face, falling off top of head!). My consultant tells me that i do not have PCO's - although I currently have 3 cysts on my ovary. I feel like a complete time waster when I go into hospital, but the pain becomes so unbearable. Is there anyone out there experiencing similar problems?

Oh Breezie poor you. Saw this and didnt want it to go unanswwered. Altho, I dont have the same as you. However, I AM being investigated atm for a problem in that area myself, but at this point I have no idea what for. (long story, but basically had abnormal smear and have had lots of other symptoms for a long while which up until now GP has taken no notice of...)

This will bump your thread for you, and I hope you get some answers soon.

How can your consultanat say that you have not got polycystic ovaries? that is ridiculous by defintition polycystic- many cysts which you obviously have.
Are you taking any medication, have you seen an endocrinologist?

expatinscotland · 04/10/2006 14:15

Hiya!

Yes, Breezie, you have multiple cysts on your ovaries and you have a brain donor for a consultant who says you don't have 'poly' cystic ovaries.

How much does this worthless sack of shite earn/year, I wonder?

It's a travesty that someone who can't seem to comprehend the meaning of 'poly' can be unleashed upon an unsuspecting populace to practice medicine.

Thank you Expat and Yorkshire lass - am going to see my 5th consultant in 4 years next week - shall stamp my feet till he does something other than cut me open for another look. DP is going to tag along to back me up.
on the medication front I have not even been given pain killers (on army issue pain killers courtesy of DP!), I had the mirena coil for a while via my last consultant (AKA the butcher - she made me cry when she last examined me and then suggested I had been abused as a child, which i hadnt) but that gave me more cysts and i nearly lost the ovary so had it removed. I could catalogue the real life soap opera that is my repro system for an aga so will stop now!!
thank you both again

Can i ask how you had the surgery?

i have a huge cyst(12cms by 12cms!) im seeing the consultants team on Monday to see how they are going to remove it, but im worried about fertility, and recovery times.

Breezie · 08/10/2006 20:10

Izzybiz, sorry I didn't reply sooner - busy weekend...
My first big cyst was about the same size as yours, they didnt find it till it had ruptured and damaged the ovary so had to remove the whole ovary and half the fallopian tube. I managed concieve DS within 3 months of that though!!! They dont have to remove the ovary, but even if they do my consultant told me it only affected my fertility by about 5%. The scar from that surgery was pretty huge though (I was initially told that my pubic hair would cover it - but unless I had a monster bush that would be impossible!!!). All my other cysts were drained via keyhole surgery, which they may do with yours. The recovery time on the big cyst was longer as the cut in my stomach was 14cm long, I was home within a couple of days, but its rather like having a caesarian. With the others it was more the general anaesthetic that caused the problems.
Bit long-winded, but hope that was of some help. Good luck tomorrow - and dont let them go anywhere near you with a mirena coil as they can cause cysts.

Have returned to the Consultant, who has sent me away to do a 6 week pain diary (DP read it 5 days in and was horrified by the level of pain I am still experiencing). Anyway my brain donor of a consultant has sacked me off for 6 months till the next appt and I want to string him up.

My next plan of action is to find another consultant... Is there anyone out there who can recommend a good Gynie? I live in North Yorkshire, so Newcastle, York or Leeds would be ideal, but really I am willing to travel to outer mongolia if it will help!

Thanks x

Breezie

Has anyone ever mentioned endometriosis to you?. Has the underlying cause for all this ever been fully determined?.

Have you been told what type of cysts you actually have?. I can think of four different types offhand. Not at all suggesting you do not have PCOS (the symptoms you describe are symptomatic of the condition) but I was wondering if something else is also there. The constant pain is symptomatic of endometriosis (especially if the pain is cyclical) and this could be why an ovary had to be removed (a "chocolate cyst" on the ovary rupturing).

Asking you also to keep a six week pain diary says endometriosis to me as well.

As for the cons I would put your request on www.endo.org.uk on their message board. Many of the women on there have had vast experience of dealing with good and poor gynaes and you may get a recommendation that way.

izzybiz · 15/10/2006 16:12

Breezie,

Thanks for the reply, i had my appt, and im booked in for surgery at the end of Nov.
They are going to do it like a ceasarean, ive been told i will be in 4-5 days after.
They have said the ovary may need to be removed too, but obviously dont know till they are in there!
Thanks again its good to know you managed to fall pg so quickly after too!

Hope you get yours sorted soon.

Breezie · 16/10/2006 10:52

Atilla, endometriosis was mentioned about a year ago by my GP, but the consultant said there was no chance of that as they had looked inside me via surgery so many times that it would have been noticed. But having said that, the pain always used to be vaguely cyclical, it is just in the last year that it has become more erratic. The cysts have sections in them (cannot remember the name for that) and I currently have 4 actual cysts which are all about 3cm across.

I am going to look on the endo site now. Tahanks for your help.
