Nasal flu vaccine for toddlers

I'm open to opinions one way or the other here. The area I live is offering the nasal spray to all 2-11year olds. Is this a 'no brainer, just get it' situation? Or should I decline? What's everyone's thoughts and why? DD is 2.5 Smile

Does anyone know if they can have it if they have a cold/cough?

AnguaResurgam · 30/10/2014 08:52

"if they have cough/cold" - depends on the symptoms.

"However, if nasal congestion is present that might limit delivery of the vaccine to the nasal lining. Delaying vaccination with that vaccine until the nasal congestion is reduced should be considered." (CDC)

Thanks!! that's actually pretty obvious now I think about it! How will a nasal spray get up a nose if it's blocked - doh! Will see how she is on Saturday (when her apt is booked for)

I don't understand this 'give it to children to protect elderly from getting it rubbish'

My DS having it for main purpose of protecting himself as flu likely to have serious implications for him, he has yet another chest infection from what was a cold, which then sets of his asthma. Given that me and DD have had flu its not something you get over in a few days

SideOfFoot · 30/10/2014 19:27

Ignore, sorry but if he a chest infection from what was a cold, the flu vaccine isn't going to make any difference to that. The flu vaccine will prevent a few strains of flu but not 100%. It will do NOTHING to stop a cold. If ds has a chest infection from a cold he would still get that, flu vaccine or not.

I know vaccine wont stop chest infection & cold, I meant that he is prone to chest infections just from a cold, so something like getting the flu god knows what would do to him.
