Microgynon and mood swings with a teenager...

My almost 16yr old DD has been on microgynon for almost 3 months. She used to be on Yasmin but came off that a few months ago due to having hot flushes. Prior to microgynon she wasn't on a pill for 6 months but her acne returned badly so she was put on microgynon which has helped her skin but her mood swings are terrible, and I mean terrible. She is verging on depressed.....constant flow of tears and extremely unhappy with life.

I have looked up the side effects with microgynon and mood swings, irritability and depression is one of them. Should I consider taking her off it?

I know being a teenage girl is a tough enough job in itself....been there myself although 30+ years ago but has anyone else ever come across this particular pill causing such an effect to mental health? TIA x

the side effects (if any) of each pill are very personal, but it is entirely possible. She needs to return to the GP ASAP and try a different type of pill.

Thank you......I will get her an appt this coming week.....

As she's so young, perhaps she should ask for a lower estrogen dose one like loestrin 10.

Microgynon is quite full on. It used to give me corking headaches in my pill free period.

If its just for acne is dianette still available?

She's got an appt this aftn with the nurse at our surgery...they do the pill check appts. I definitely feel microgynon is playing a part in her moods....she's only been on it for just under three months and she's been really moody for the last few weeks. She's on the pill mainly for acne which has actually got better since being on microgynon. I will ask about dianette....I'm wondering if they would consider putting her on the mini pill? I've been on cerazette for years and have been fine on it. Life with her at the moment is absolutely dire and we have to do something...I know life as a teenager isn't the easiest but having read the side effects with microgynon I do believe it is not helping...

I had horrible mood swings on microgynon. The GP wouldn't take me off it because 'you might get pregnant and then you'd really have problems'. If I had been a bit older I'd have fought my corner but I stuck with it for a couple of years. When I moved GPs I came off it and my moods instantly improved. Should have insisted from the start!

Micogynon nearly cost me my relationship and my sanity. I honestly thought I was losing my mind.

I was on it briefly at 16 - it sent me bonkers. My poor parents! They put me on some kind of 'phasic' pill after that, where the hormone level varies throughout the month. Not even sure if they do that one now - this was about 20 years ago!

BTW I took microgynon for decades and was fine. It is all very personal. But it is definitely not right for your daughter by the sound of it. There are plenty of other options.

Hi, thanks for all the replies. DD has been taken off microgynon. She's to go pill free for a few weeks to see if her emotional state improves. The nurse we saw was actually a friend of mine and has four daughters herself and because we were her last appt for the day she spent 40mins with us...having a good chat with DD, talking about her life, bullying at school (she was badly bullied at school), how she feels about life now etc.....whilst I'm not saying the pill is fully to blame I'm fairly sure it wasn't helping.....as regards her acne the nurse has told us to steer clear of potions and lotions and to wash with warm water and use an oil free moisturiser....which we've been doing anyway but she added she should also steam her face....I have a facial steamer so we'll give that a go too.....just got to find ways to cope without going on the pill....this being a parent of a teenager is hard work! I've got another DD (11) so atleast maybe by the time she hits 16 I'll know how to deal with it all a bit better!

My DD17 was given Microgynon for her mood swings(!) and to help regulate her cycle! She spent most of the 3 months she was taking it, in floods of tears.
She was then given Femodene, same result!
She's now been prescribed Yasmin, but I've read horror stories about stroke and depression, so DD is very reluctant to try.
Apparently Microgynon is the cheapest to prescribe so usually gets given initially. Yasmin is twice the price!

I had acne on my chin that couldn't go away and got prescribed a topical antibiotic. It was a powder that you mix with pure water, shake and apply directly on through the sponge at the top of the bottle. It was fab and the acne never came back. Perhaps she could ask after something like that?

nelehluap · 22/10/2014 17:42

DD was on Yasmin for a couple of years prior to being taken off of it earlier this year. She was fine on it until she started getting regular daily hot flushes so got taken off of it. I'd also heard some pretty awful stories about it re blood clots so I was glad we made the decision to take her off it. Once off it after a few days the flushes began to subside and after about six weeks went altogether. I'm certain microgynon has caused the truly terrible mood swings, regular tears, feeling very low etc...we can only see what happens now she's off of it.....probably take her (like Yasmin) a few weeks to get out of her system but if she's happier we can cope.....as regards her acne...yes its a bit of worry and I will ask about the powder...not heard of that one. At the moment she's just using a Simple wipe to remove any make up (she uses oil free make up) and washes with just warm water.....only time will tell with both counts.....skin and monthlies!
