TIA, please help me reassure my DFather

Yesterday dad felt tingling in his left side, so went to see an out of hours doctor, who said it was a TIA.
My father is 72, in excellent health, normal weight, takes exercise, non-smoker, healthyish eater, moderate drinker. And this has scared him. His blood pressure shot up yesterday - probably because he was afraid. He can still feel a slight tingling in his foot today.

Please can you tell me that your relatives had a one off TIA, with no further problems and lived for years.

People with TIA s can go on and live long lives but he should go to his GP tomorrow and get referred to the stroke unit. They will screen him for all the treatable causes of a TIA, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, diabetes. The thing about a TIA is that it is a warning sign to do something so I would ensure an urgent referral to the stroke clinic this week.

Everything that musical said is absolutely spot on.

I would like to add that a GP cannot diagnose a TIA, they can suspect one but a proper assessment with scans, bloods etc needs to be done. This would usually be done by a Stoke Consultant on an outpatient basis (I used to do the nursing assessments for these).

Please make sure that your Dads GP refers him.
