Can you spare some money to support MSF?

I have no connections with this organisation but I'm completely in awe of the selfless doctors and nurses who are putting themselves at risk of a horrendous death treating the poor people with this disease. If they have the resources they need surely the risk they put themselves in will reduce.

You can donate online. MSF relies on charitable donations.

I'm disgusted at governments' responses. If they had cared more 3 months ago this problem would have been much easier to resolve. It's going to cost a lot more now both financially and in terms of lives. Lots more African orphans.

We British are usually good (and generous) in a crisis it's one of the things that makes me proud to be British Grin

I've donated all I can to MSF this month, will see what is left after next payday.

Have you seen this?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-29656417

The UN have asked for a $1Bn fund to help fight ebola. Although $20m has been pledged, only Colombia has paid in $100,000.

I don't understand why countries aren't giving more funds to help fight this outbreak and to support the poor people who are directly affected.

Achooblessyou · 17/10/2014 20:40

That's a shocking read ritzy.

I know it doesn't kill as many as malaria but it needs to be brought under control and quickly.

There is also the article on mumsnet home page saying 14 out of 18 nurses in one place have died of Ebola. 3 understandably have fled.

I just saw that on the news, Ritzy. :(

GaryShitpeas · 18/10/2014 09:38

I donated the other day

And would urge others to do the same, even a small amount will help

TheLovelyBoots · 18/10/2014 12:38

I sent 150 to the world food programme earlier this month earmarked for Liberia. Some serious food shortages to contend with....

Achooblessyou · 18/10/2014 21:13

Agree even small amounts help. They really need it.

There are serious food shortages as farmers abandon farms. This is hitting the affected countries in so many ways.

MSF have been doing the lions share of the healthcare side throughout this outbreak.

Achooblessyou · 19/10/2014 12:11

MSF rely on charitable donations. I really think that the best thing is to throw lots of resource at this now (we should have done it 3 months ago). If ebola isn't tackled head on it's going to be more expensive in the long run.

I think governments have been reluctant to spend because their voters are more concerned about closing borders than tackling the problem at source i.e. people don't want to spend money on saving African lives as long as ebola doesn't come here. So that's why I think if you can spare some cash give it to the MSF. From a selfish point of view there is a worldwide shortage of doctors so we need to give them the best support so that they are available when we need them in the future!

This isn't a thread that needs a response from anyone, as most people donate to charities in private, so here's an unashamed bump!

:)

I was just researching who best to donate to. MSF seems to be the answer. I had a text from UNICEF and might split my donation. Surprised there is no DEC appeal.

Achooblessyou · 20/10/2014 22:09

I think it's more MSFs area as it's particularly doctors nurses and medical equipment needed. So they definitely seem to be taking the brunt. Yes there are always heart-breaking situations where UNICEF need to step in, and Ebola is creating a lot of these. But I feel that the sooner the doctors can get on top of Ebola, the less work there will be for UNICEF iyswim Sad

Thanks Achoo. Yes, I think the long term impact on many parts of these societies is going to be very complex and likely long-lived.

Achooblessyou · 23/10/2014 19:04

As we heard on the news today, if Ebola takes a hold in the "slum" areas, victims will rise exponentially. Please donate to help the MSF get on top of things x

They are very good at not hassling you after. They did send me a thank you after my first donation so after the next I emailed them and asked them to save their pennies and I got a very prompt reply and absolutely no pressure to keep sending money - which makes me far more likely to keep donating to them.

Good to know kitten Smile
