can back pain due to injury cause chronic tiredness??

Hello, wondered if this is similar to anyone else's experience...
(Also apologies if I should've posted this on the back pain thread instead)
I have had unresolved back pain resulting from SPD for the last 7 years (sacroiliac dysfunction with referred pain and weakness in
whole of the right side of my back, neck, shoulder). Have had
sporadic physio both nhs and private over the years but I've never managed to get it sorted.
It flairs up if I try to do any cardio exercise (really frustrating as prior to SPD I was very into running) this includes swimming.
after a very short swim a few weeks ago I realised I'd aggravated the injury.
Since then I have had the usual back pain (paracetamol and ibroprufen doesn't help) but also felt unbelievably tired with a constant head ache, and feeling a bit forgetful too.
as tired as I have felt when pregnant - and am definitely not pregnant!
I can't remember this happening before during flair ups. It might be totally unrelated. So just wondered if this was something other people had experienced?
I am seeing GP and physio next week so hoping to calm the pain down

Could you possibly have fibromyalgia triggered by the back pain? It can happen.

beenbean · 17/10/2014 21:06

Thank you for that. I had read a bit about fibromyalgia and will ask GP. Just found several active threads about back pain on here tonight so lots of experience and advice to read through.

Chronic pain is exhausting. I am very forgetful now but am mainly attributing that to meds. So yes, very likely is down to pain for you.

On a separate note have you tried swimming front crawl with a float between your legs to avoid kicking? I can manage to swim a bit like this. I was a very keen swimmer before my injury. Do join the back thread, there are a few people on there with chronic pain since pregnancy.

I have fibro, along with ME (lucky me got the BOGOF offer there!) and the constant pain levels probably have even more effect on my exhaustion levels than the ME does. Pain is incredibly exhausting, you have my sympathies x

Thank you for your replies.
matilda thanks for the swimming suggestion, something for me to think about. Unfortunately my physio would probably advise against any swimming at all because my shoulder is involved in all of this, until I can make some progress with getting my two big core muscles recruiting again (which I have been trying to do with physio for 7 years...)
I'm going to GP tomorrow, I'm a bit apprehensive that she'll prescribe amytriptaline again. When I tried it a while back it was wonderful for the pain but spaced me out completely. But then I only stuck with it for 2 days, maybe that would improve with time.
any way thank you again for replies and thanks MN for being such a good resource for sharing back pain info Smile

been, two things that might help...firstly you have to give amytriptiline time to a) start to work as it builds up in your system and b) give the side effects time to settle. They honestly do but it does take a few weeks. You start on a very low dose then increase gradually, and I do mean gradually. I have only got to 20mgs and that gets me through the night. I do struggle a bit to waken in the morning but once I'm awake I'm fine. So yes, it's a good medication worth trying.

All a thought that if you like the water but find swimming too much, just walking up and down the pool is great exercise especially walking backwards and sideways. Add in a few squats and so on and it's fab exercise. I got a physio to come to the pools with me to work out a programme and it's kept me s strong as I can be.Smile

Matilda thank you what a great idea to walk in the pool, why hadnt I thought of that?!
Unfortunately pain meds wasnt even mentioned by the GP yesterday! Think she was a bit overwhelmed by all my symptoms!
Had bloods done today and another apt next week where I will definitely ask about amytriptaline again. It was great pain relief when I tried it before.
just wish I had the energy to go to pool and do the walking!!
Suspect we just have to force ourselves to exercise when we don't want to...
thanks again
